Most folks cut the feet off at the "knee" and save the whole lower leg. I don't know anybody that cuts the spurs off.

I do - cut spurs off

add them to the lanyard of my wingbone call from that bird taken. Make a string out of them and add them to a hat band.

This how I cut them

All I do once cut is toss in a cup of borax and let them dry. I then take a pipe cleaner and clean out the bone marrow. I do not put any finsih on them at all.

Others have pried the spur cap off and have boiled the bone so it become white and takes the scales off. to make it whiter soak in Hydrogen peroxide - Never use Bleach! - Then just glue the spur cap back on.

i do like JW only i pull the skin off and clean up the bone...usually just leave them in borax and it dried everything out and i can pull it off with needle nose pliers..comes clean and it pretty white...white enough for me..

then i do something similar to JW with the beard and spurs on leather lace...

got one hanging from my rearview mirror...only ever seen 1 other one hanging for the rearview mirror and that was here on campus...id bet he seen mine :)...mines bigger:D

every year i kill one, i rotate the fan and beard onto my plauque i made...i dont have room to display them all so the current one goes into the plauqe with the fan and beard...i put the spurs on the leather lace and hang them on the plauqe for the year...fans somehow find their way to getting ruined wherever i store them and end up having to be thrown out unless they are in the plauqe...

I do the same as JW. If I saved the whole leg it would look like the Butterball factory in the man cave.

A good friend of mine, several years my senior, has been saving all his spurs since he was a youngman.. this is a guy who travels all over the place and kills upwards of 6 or 7 birds a spring and has been doing so for almost 50 years. He has a piece of paracord the length of a double-dutch jump rope that is almost solid spurs end to end..... to put it in perspective his hunting room is converted from a two car garage and his spurs run the length of it......

I have my own piece of paracord now.... but it ain't 1/10th that length!

I take the skin/scales off mine and bleach them, then I write with a fine sharpie pen the date and the state or county I took the bird in. Helps me remember which set is which.

The whole trick is to cut off the legs at the leg joint, then let the legs "air DRY" for at least 2-3 months. They will get rock hard after that amount of time, which makes cutting off the spurs much easier. I use a band saw to cut my spurs off with, and it does an awesome job!! I try to get as close to the spur on each side of the cut. Much better way thanusing a hack saw, etc. Be sure to be very careful while doing this, you can loose some fingers in the process!!

P.S. Make sure that your pets or any other animals can't run off with them after you cut off the legs and are waiting for them to dry!! I keep them in my basement on top of the floor support beam. Works very well!!

If I'm not mistaking, I've heard once that you can pop off the spur. It is like a covering and just squeeze with a pliars and the "case" or spur will come off. Never tried it. I do as JW does.
