hens coming in to check it out
I'm still learning alot about turkey hunting I have never had anyone show me or take me out but really have had great luck. Anyway do you guys have hens come in and actually take a look what is going on when set up and the calling starts. I have had this happen many times and seem odd. They just show up look and wonder around and leave.

Yup, One thing you'll learn thats very valuable to a turkey hunter... where there's hens... there's gobblers,,, and if you make those hens mad, they'll sometimes bring gobblers with them.

I never had anyone show me nor were there video and forums then. basically had to learn on my own.
The hens come in to be social, but seen no reason to say...the decoys don't have much personally.... |
RE: hens coming in to check it out
Yeah thats a good thing if hens come in. Actually, if ANY turkey comes in its good. Theyre curious. With the hens, theyre very social so you might see this often.

YOU BETCHA!
NOW DON'T WASTE THOSE OPPORTUNITIES! What I do and do it all the time on single - multiple hens that come in - listen to their calls - practice making slight moves to see how much I can get away with - without spooking them! I even try to ever so slowly bring the gun up and then put it back down. Only do that if I know no Tom is around. Most times having a real hen in your decoys is a good thing. And if for some reason thr decoy(s) seem to make those hens nervous - I try to analyze what is wrong and make decoy adjustments later. JW |
RE: hens coming in to check it out
Thanks for the tips. I had one come in 2 years ago and the thing stayed arond for 40 min. It would come up to decoy and talk to it and just feed around that decoy. I was set up on edge of a grain feld that was harvested. It was very cool to see.

RE: hens coming in to check it out
Another thing...something i like to do if a hen comes in really talkative. I shut up. In other words, I quit calling and let the real turkey do the calling for me. One time, i was calling and calling calling....nothin. All of a sudden a hen comes in, makes a few yelps and this gobble came out of no where. I'm thinking, do I not call good enough or what???

I'm thinking, do I not call good enough or what? Just Kidding, but, sometime's I think that about myself. Using those Raspy Calls. TF |
RE: hens coming in to check it out
The gobbler may have been following the hen when he came in. Also they will usually go much quicker to a live hen they can see walking and talking than just hearing a call or stationary decoys.
