Preach it Sawmpman, preach it.
I agree, 100%. While you will never in a million years catch me turkey hunting with a rifle, who cares if others do it legally?
The only concern I have with it is safety, If rifles are allowed, I believe hunter orange should be a neccessity. I'd likely not hunt with decoys if rifles were allowed around me either.

Goose will have to forgive me for speaking for him here.... but no he didn't say its fine to shoot a turkey with an assault rifle... while there are lots of definitions of an assault rifle, the commonly accepted definition (including a high cap magazine) would infact be illegal under Florida law. Goose at no point in his post encouraged anything illegal or even immoral or unethical.
The plain and simple fact here is that his state, as well as several others have deemed it legal to take turkeys with a rifle. Period. Choosing to hunt a turkey with a rifle doesn't make you not a "hunter". By legal definition, purchasing a license and going afield under legal conditions makes you a hunter... or in the states eyes... just buying a license makes you a hunter.
This forum is for anyone who hunts turkeys, under any and all legal conditions... that includes fall hunts with dogs, spring hunts with guns, archery tackle, and yes.... rifle hunters as well. If you don't like the cook, get da hell up out da kitchen.

So your saying its fine to shoot a turkey with an assault rifle too, just because the meat tastes the same? Have we forgot the key word here, which is "hunting"?
Ok ok...fine. If you want to shoot a turkey with a rifle (notice I said "shoot", not "hunt"), go find a Turkey Shooters forum. But we HUNTERS like to congregate on the Turkey Hunting forum, which consists of HUNTERS who respect the bird and learn to develop patience and learn to call in the birds within shooting range to be able to get the "thrill of the hunt" not thrill of the kill.

I will post my opinion though... its not hunting, regardless if its deer, or turkey or ducks or quail.. If its over 50 yards... fair chase has left the building

Here's a very good point.... if rifle hunting was permitted in this state, Iwould probably not use decoys... or call for that matter... just so some yahoo doesn't fire into the woods to kill me...

I agree totally. I know this debate came up a few weeks ago, and I made the point then that it was inherently more dangerous, especially with the influx of full strutt decoys being used, coupled with the use of total camo concealment and sitting on the ground. If a turkey can't see a hunter from 30 yards... I don't suspect another hunter from 100+ yards to see him either. Again though, if you think safety first and make sure of your target and whats beyond it, its really no more dangerous than anything else... and still a hell of a lot safer than the commute to and from your hunting location.

Pretty steep where I hunt, and hunt mostly as landowner so I don't see many hunters, don't see why it would be any more dangerous than gun season for deer. I don't see but one or two hunters during deer season either.

I realize that IFone checks his shot and knows his background like he should, there still would be no problem. Problem is, there are a lot of egg heads out there hunting, who I wouldnt trust for a second in this situation. If rifles are legal, I am not using decoys IMO.

If its legal rock on - most of you guys wanting to debate the sporting versus non sporting issue probably havent killed over a hand full of birds. If Florida sees fit to let this hand shoot a rifle and thats what he intends to do so be it . Its his business - I dont think he asked if it was sporting or not

I hunt in WV and have never used a shotgun for turkey, i prefer my .22 Magnum....neither has my dad who has killed several with his .222 remington. By the way he doesn't believe in using any calls, he doesn't feel it's 'sporting' he says he prefers to 'hunt' for his turkey.

My point is it's just one person's opinion, my father happens not to use a call. He kills a turkey nearly every year, I bet some of the people on here would have a difficult time with the challenge he takes on, especially where he hunts, but instead everyone wants to raise hell because they think there way is the only way and everyone else is an idiot. Me personally I like stick&circle, but like him I prefer the rifle. And kudos to the poster who stated that if your making sure of your target then it's no more dangerous than any other hunting.

It would be more dangerous for three main reasons, one turkey hunters hunt from the ground, not from a treestand. two, turkey hunters often have decoys out in front of them not 15 yards away, while three, they are covered head to toe in camo for no one to see. Easy situation for someone to get shot.
