Turkey air sac?

Just curious if any body knew why the turkey has an air sac? I was just reading JW's post on How I clean turkeys or other big birds (great post by the way I do mine the same way )and saw the air sac in the picture. Any body have a clue?

Now I have to inspect it closer when I get a turkey this year. I'm not sure if it is the crop or if it surrounds the crop. PS. I heard my future dead tom gobbling at 0630 this morning. I can't wait until May 1st!!!:D
