Help! Recommend a mouth call
 

I' ve used a lot of calls but have decided to try to get a mouth call. Ones before I always gagged on :( , but now there looks like a lot of good calls out there. Recommend the one I should begin with. :eek::)

I would start out with a thin latex double reed call. They take less air to make work and are easier to learn on IMO.

The advice above is great and remember all the cutting and flydown cackles aren`t half as important as a good cluck and purr.

LV,the layout of a diaphragm turkey call still is very much the same as it was in many years past!Dont think just because it has a namebrand on it that it wont make you gag!!For many getting over the gag reflex,or just getting the call to fit properly or comfortbly to your palate is alot of the battle in using a diaphragm call!An improper frame size can make an individual gag and can cause the call not to operate to its full capacity because air will get around the call instead of through your tongue and reeds!A double reed or light triple reed is a good suggestion to start with and for beginners I would suggest a frame like H.S.' s alumistrut line of diaphragms.The frame is bendable and can be made to fit to the contours of your palate making it more comfortable,and more importantly it will stay in one place,which is very important in maintaining a consistent quality sound!Hope this helps you some,and keep practicing.Bob:)

I suggest an HS strut 2 reed call also.;)

The mouth calls from River Valley Game Calls are a smaller frame and may fit your mouth much better. Too many times the larger framed calls need trimmed. You might fit into the catagory of needing a smaller frame. Many peoples pallot is too small for a some of the bigger framed calls.

I recommend the Ridge Runner or Kee Kee double reed calls, or in a triple, the Sweet Talker from River Valley Game Calls.

While sitting with Quaker Boy pro staff member Damon Davis, he doesn' t recommend first time mouth callers into a two reed call, he say' s it might be easier but the sounds are quite as true as a three reed call. The three reed takes more air but when you get the sound, you' ll be closer to calling turkey sounds. For his recommendation is why I mention the three reed Sweet Talker.

Agree, H.S. Strut 2.5 best around in my opinion.
