Help needed with shot size and dram eq
As my name indicates, I'm a novice! I'm seeking to use my British SXS for turkey. Problem is, the 2 3/4 in chamber is nitro-proofed for 1 1/8 oz of shot. The only reasonable ammo that I can find is 1 1/8 oz of size 6 shot with a 3 1/4 dram eq. Is this OK for turkey?
Thanks for your help! Novice in PA |
RE: Help needed with shot size and dram eq
Sure it is reasonable, you are just going to have to get them right in your face. Depending on your constriction (which is hopefully at least 1/2 choke) I'd say that much beyond 30 yards may be a touch risky, and boarder line irresponsible. Certainly going to need to take it out to the range and put it through the paces and find out what sort of range you'll have a good pattern at.
What gun are you shooting? I'm a double gun buff by profession (although I get to do very little true double gun stuff anymore)... always interested in this sort of thing. |
RE: Help needed with shot size and dram eq
Thanks, Swamp. I am using a 1906 Cogswell & Harrison BLE.
The reason that I am so confused is that the shot described is labeled "Dove Load". I figured that I would need to stick to a fairly close shot - I will take your advice and get a pattern first. Thanks! PS - I'm using a full choke |
RE: Help needed with shot size and dram eq
I'd get a gun that shoots 3" shells and go with either 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 loads. Your choice of 4's, 5's or 6's. A dove load I don't think will cut it. Compare the size of the birds. If they're that close I'd consider using my bow instead!

RE: Help needed with shot size and dram eq
You should be fine. Just dont shoot long range shots. Id try and get them within 25 if you can. Besides, the closer you can get them, the better in my opinion. Thats what its all about, bringin those things in.

RE: Help needed with shot size and dram eq
Thanks folks! I'm trying to look beyond what the manufacturer chooses to place on their label ("Heavy Dove Load") and instead consider the basic parameters of the shell (1 1/8 oz.; #6; 3 1/4 dram eq.).
I realize that a lot of turkeys were taken before magnum shells hit the market! Novice in PA |
