Are we talking about shooting them from their roost or hunting near their roost? Hunting near their roost:Absolutely. Shooting them from their roost: Absolutely not.

In MO it isn't an option. We can't hunt after 1 PM. Only being able to hunt part of the day is good for the turkeys. Gives them a chance to regroup for the evening and makes sure the hens all get breed.

No way! Even if it was legal I still wouldn't do that way.

i see no differents between hunting on the roost and shooting them out of the tree, but to each his own

Turkey on the ground?= dead turkey. There is no way to know which exact tree to sit under to get a shot at that tom.

I wouldn't shoot a turkey on roost, but wouldn't look down on someone huggin up to a roosting area and tryin to catch one before it heads back up.

How would this be different than setting up on a known strutting zone?

RockyMtnGobbler 03-19-2008 12:12 AM

RE: roost hunting

Setting up in a Roosting area is no different to me than setting up in a Strutt zone or Travel rout, NONE are a guarantee! Isn't that why we hunt, becausethere is no guarantee, for the challenge?
Turkeys don't always roost in the same tree or roost area, thats why they call it hunting.
I would never shoot a turkey out of a tree! Thats not fair chase!
I have hunted in knownroosting areas, strutting areas and travel routs turkeys change their habits according to pressure etc.
Thats just me, to each his own.

OKAY
First my thoughts on shooting roosting birds - oughta and is illegal in some states. O don't do it!

Now..........

Scenrio

You are in a river bottom - is rather wet after a flood - there is puddles and small ponds alll over the place - is midmorning - you working this Tom that comes flying through the trees - as he took off from a ridge to your right- you see him and are excited and expect him to light right in front of you - you have no decoy out - the river bottom trees are huge silver maples - tree canopy and branches are really high - here he comes - he is flying at you as if a poster kid off the Wild Turkey Liquor bottle - You see the red head, the beard - the whole ten yards - He is a Huge birdand he lights in the only dang branch 10 feetoff the ground- 20 yards in front of you. You have called this bird in!

What do you do?

Ps this is a true story.

JW- That isn't a roosted bird. Its one you called in. I don't know what I'd do in that situation, but i wouldn't knock you for shooting it. To me you did your work, the bird came to you. you didn't home in on a bird gobbling on the roost then nail him before fly down.

"Dead Bird" Thats what Micheal Waddel said a few years back,,, he did that very thing, called one in and it flew in from a little ways off, and lit ina tree looking for the hen,, he shot it.

But, I wouldnt shoot on from the roost, we can wait for them to come to the rooast in the evening here in Mo, but we do set up and hope they fly down close to us in the morning.

RE: roost hunting

This is pretty much a moot point in PA in the spring, can't hunt past noon. Do you feel its ok to find birds the night before, then setup under them so they drop in your lap?

In the fall, it ain't no difference between that and just waiting them out at any other destination location.

Dr Andy 03-19-2008 11:49 AM

RE: roost hunting

No guarantee they'll drop in your lap. f they spot you or hear you coming in they will fly far before landing. In IL it's illegal to shoot a turkey on the roost until 8am. I guess the early risers have it made!

JNTURK 03-19-2008 11:58 AM

RE: roost hunting

i love wild turkey, but i would try to first hunt him during the morning or afternoon and use my skills to call him in...as the season goes and if i have had no success then i would consider hunting at his roosting area and seeing if i could get him in close enough, but i would use a bow and not a shotgun...JMO...

also in CA no hunting past 4pm...so you couldn't do it anyways

Arrowmaster 03-19-2008 04:26 PM

RE: roost hunting

Well in Indiana you can hunt until sunset. Sure I would hunt a roost area in the evening. But as for shooting one while hes in a tree roosted. No way. Theres a difference shooting one when hes on the ground or that you have patterned or called in. Thats working the bird. Im against shooting one out of a tree. Thats my honest opinion, but different strokes for different folks...:)
