What call are you using this spring?
Im going to spring turkey hunt for the first time this year, looking for the best calls you guys know of (please no mouth calls, i suck with them)
i got the decoys just need some good calls, thnx! |
RE: What call are you using this spring?
Hunter Specialties makes some good slate calls. I dont think you can go wrong with a slate call with the realistic hen sounds you can get out of them. Only thing I use and hasnt failed me yet.

RE: What call are you using this spring?
you looking for production call or custom and do you have a budget?
|
RE: What call are you using this spring?
i primarily use a primos "lil heartbreaker" box call and a primos "old glory" frictionite slate call. both are fairly easy to use. i do use mouth calls occasionally but that is still a work in progress.

A slate call is my favorite after my mouth calls.

RE: What call are you using this spring?
real slate that is not any of the artificial stuff.

RE: What call are you using this spring?
Woodhavens... just about exclusively. Its kinda like fishing lures... if you are in a good fishing spot, you could probably catch fish on anything... and once you have had a few of those days when you are using the same bait on those days... you'll swear its magic... thats kinda my experience with woodhaven calls. They sound great... and for me they work.

RE: What call are you using this spring?
Slate call by Cody, and Quaker Boy and Primos. But my first choice is my mouth calls...

KNIGHT & HALE SLATE HAMMER JUST GOT ONE I LOVE IT

RE: What call are you using this spring?
Well it depends on the situation. If I hear a gobbler on the roost i normally set up and crack out either my Knight and Hale Slate queen or Primos Jackpot glass call. If i don't get a gobble on the roost i normally use my quaker boy hurricane box call to reach out further. I am looking into the nwtf crystal call by woodhaven or the primos power crystal as the new call of the year.

RE: What call are you using this spring?
Any call from Hunters Specialties, considering they arent real expensive and they sounds great. One of my favorites, which isnt made by HS i dont think, is the Thunder Dome. Best sounding yelps ive heard out of any call ive ever heard. I say learn to call with a slate call, personally i think they are the most versatile.

Turkey Calls
|
RE: What call are you using this spring?
Not for sureif its even still made but i'll be using my knight and hale ol'yeller sla-tek. and my primos wing bone yelper.
|
RE: What call are you using this spring?
Primos Power Crystal or the Knight and Hale Ol' Yeller would be my $20 price range pics. Even without a price range, I'll still use 'em!
|
RE: What call are you using this spring?
I second the power crystal. Just got one and it sounds terrific. Obviously if you get one you will need to sand the heck out of it but it sounds great.

RE: What call are you using this spring?
You've got decoys, but no call....?........ I think you got your priorities out of whack on that one, but you still have time. My season opens on Saturday. I don't know how much time you have got to practice but here is some basic observations.
1.) Most $20 calls are capable of sounding attractive enough to call in a bird. 2.) Mouth calls are versatile, cheap, and effective, ...but require a LOT of practice and meticulous maintenance to last through the season. 3.) Box calls are pretty easy to learn, but require more movement and often both hands to operate and do require some maintenance. The best are also the most expensive in the business. 4.) Pot type friction calls are easier to maintain than a box, but are a little tougher to learn how to play. However, I purrs and clucks are hard to beat on a slate. Probably your best bet if you are a beginner on a budget and want to use it next year. Now, what is most important is to geta mentor who can teach you how to play your new instrument. When I got a tenor sax in highschool, I thought I sounded great, until I heard somebody who really knew how to play. He helped me learn to play the sax. Apply the same logic to your chosen instrument and don't be shy to ask questions. It is much easier to learn from a turkey hunter than the turkey. Happy Hunting and God bless. |
