What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
I haven't had the money to invest in a good turkey gun so i use my paps old single shot that takes three inch shells. I bought remington nitro turkeys last year and they were terrible so i used the ones he gave me with the gun. I am thinking either Remington Wingmaster HD turkey or the xtended range winchesters. The Remingtons have the same ounce shot and stuff as the old shells so i am thinking those ones. Which would you shoot and try out. Give as much info as possible please. Thanks.

What choke/constriction is that old single?
If it has a fixed constriction, you can put your wallet down because you don't want to shoot any of the high density stuff down it. My two favorite lead/copper plated #6 shells were always Win Supreme (black box) 2oz 3" #6 and Rem Premier HV 3" 1 3/4oz #6. Killed quite a few with both of them. |
RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
Winchester Extended Range PERIOD

RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
Try lead loads of #5 or #6 in winchester and federal. These loads pattern well in alot of guns.

RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
I believe it is a full constriction barrel.I guess i should add that i would like to shoot out to 30 yards max.

RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
You're going to have to shoot it bud, no way to tell...
Not only do you have to look at pellet delivery, some shells don't center the pattern like others do... I'd start with Winchester Supremes and Federal Premiums, in a standard full choke I'd stick with #6s for more pellet count and inside of 40 yards #6s will kill them dead... You might be suprised how well that gun groups, I've got a double barrel 12gauge that I used 30 years ago, with Remington high brass 6s, I killed several out to 35 yards... It doesn't take 15 pellets in the neck/head area to kill a turkey...4-5 will do just nicely... |
RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
I second the Winchester Supremes. I would try 5 or 6 shot, because even with errant flyers, you have more chances (i.e. more pellets!) to hit the mark.
Save the money you were going to put in the X-tended Range, and put that money into an optics system. Either a cheap red-dot scope, or fiber optic sights. I used a c-lect choke Mossberg for years, and used #6 Winchester supremes with great results. Those results increased drastically when I added a fiber optic bead and painted the rear site with optic paint ;) |

I shoot remington loads.... I do not believe they are HD... They are commonly found at Dincks though

RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
winchester extended range
|
RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
Thanks for the follow up strutter.
I would seriously NOT shoot Win Extended range in that gun. I shoot it myself, and its a wonderful product, but with your fixed constriction, the hardness of a high density tungsten based shot could damage your firearm. Any of the lead/copper plated loads recommended in this thread will work great for you out to 30 yards, and most likely even a bit farther. Good luck. |
RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
agreed.

RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
Strutter,
Those are the shells I recommended ;) and are excellent. If you're going to try and limit the range to 30 yards, I would recommend #5 or #6 shot. The denser pattern will increase your chances if you pull slightly off target. If you're not good at judging distances, I would test #4 and #5, because lead #6 lose energy very rapidly after 35-40 yards. If you can afford it, I would try all three sizes, and then go with the shot that gives you the best pattern. In my older gun, I would always chamber #6, and then have #5s in the magazine. They did not pattern quite as well, but gave me the extra distance if I needed a quick second shot at a slightly longer distance... You may also want to consider the new Flite control Federals, I know many hunters are raving about the groups they are getting. I think you should be able to get the shells a little cheaper too, shop around... S&R |

You should lisen to swampcollie;)
As far as your gun throwing a decent pattern past 30 yards... I doubt it... You might be surprised to find out that, that ol single shot wont pattern much past 20 yards... Do your self a favor... Pattern your gun;););) |
RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
I am going to pattern my gun but don't want to spend 100's of dollars on shells so i am looking for suggestions of what to buy. To me it sounds like winchester gets the nod in the turkey shell department.

RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
Winchester Supreme Double-X you wont regret it trust me.
|
RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
As some of the others have said, I would go with Win Supreme 3" #6 shot and definitely pattern your gun. You wont ever know the ability of your gun until you pattern it and its the least you can do for the bird you are shooting at!

RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
If I was very short of cash I would buy a box of the cheaper shells..several on this site recommend Winchester Supremes and they are tops in my gun so far. Then I would pattern them. If the center of the pellet pattern is center at the point of aim. You are in good shape. Test some loads at 20-30-40. The pattern itself will tell you your max. range....than just don't shoot until they are within your "Sure kill range."
It is more fun to call them closer anyway. So many turkey hunters are trying too hard to increase their shooting range at great expense....rather than "Fine tuning" their woodmenship and calling skills..... |
RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
I have two choices, Winchester Supreme and the Hevi Shot. The second one cost more but is worth it in my opinion.
|
RE: What 3 inch 6 shot shell?
If all u have is a full choke i would try the federal #5 shot flight controll because they were developed for that kind of restriction and work great

To me it sounds like winchester gets the nod in the turkey shell department. The other great way to do this is to get together a group of between 2 and 5 hunters, and everyone buy a box of something different, then split them up between you. You'll end up getting to try as many as 5 or even 10 different loads for the price of only one or two boxes of shells. |
