difference between a hunter and a real wild turkey afield??If so how???
Out of over 20 years huntin turks I can only remember twice being fooled by another hunter.Could have been more but I never went to check and see!Besides quality of sound it seems rythm and cadence help me recognize a hunter more than anything else, coupled with the situation and where I'm at!How about you??
Monarch isn't a butterfly it's the King of the Spring!

Hey Bob,I' m like you.Only been fooled a few times.Funny thing is I thought it was a bad caller and it turned out to be a real turkey. Most hunters actually sound too good.Or else their callin is too mechanical.

No doubt jalvja - no turkey would stand a chance in a calling contest. Had my father tell me " you need to slow down, call less, not so quickly" the calling he was talking about was a hen w/a gobbler that was mad at the competition. Unfortunately wasn' t able to get anything but a good look at the tom she brought along. But I had that hen less than 4 feet from me puttin' ... I could see her blink - and right on the other side of this huge brush pile, I could hear the tom strutting back and forth - the swooshing of his wings against the ground and the puffin' of his chest. Truely awesome.

I' ve been fooled by more than a couple callers, and most of the time they' re rookie callers! Seems the more experience a guy gets, the more " fake" he gets! Live turkeys sound like crap!

I have never been fooled by a caller that I thought was a turkey. On the other hand, I am pretty sure that I was being stalked by another hunter because he answered my every call with another hen call and even a few kee kees and it was Spring.

I think a lot of you have been fooled a lot more times than you think.
I can tell you I was able to really improve my success once I called in and competed against a boss hen my first time. She really gave me the right sound to reproduce. I was much too quite and less agressive before then.

I think so. Most hunters get stuck in a routine: ie, repeating the same number of yelps are combination of calls. Also, the majority of callers are usually a little slow in their cadacenses. Hunters usually remain in their calling positions for an extended period of time where as most turkeys are moving along doing their thing. I have heard some people calling that would be hard to tell the difference between them and the real thing but so far I don' t believe I have been fooled very many times. In the past I called in many contests and have been a judge in quite a few, and in 35 years of hunting, have heard hundreds of real turkeys and feel like I can tell them from the fake.

I haven' t been fooled by another hunter to my knowledge. But on a couple of occasions I' ve said to my hunting partner" Here comes some loud abnoxious hunter. Man he' s loud and terrible!" Only to have a hen walk into view doing the calling.
