What do you take to the woods with you?
StruttinGobbler3was asking about a Blind. I thought what do most Turkey Hunters Take to the Woods?
BESIDES The Must Have's? TP, Tag, Gun, Shells, Calls, What else do you take? On your person and In your Truck, Car! This should be interesting! I'll start off with B-Mobile and a hen Decoy. TF |

2 decoys, 10 diaphrams, 2 slates, 3 strikers, one owl hoot, one coyote howler, extra shells (if shotgun hunting) knife, string for tying on the tag, bottle of water and a BIG turkey vest to carry it all!!! There's probably more, but I can't think of any more!!!!

|
RE: What do you take to the woods with you?
Everything but the kitchen sink ... :D, my turkey vest is full of diaphrams , box calls , push pins , slate , glass , friction calls , strikers ,decoys and if that wasn't enough I have a back pack filled with my lunch , water , snacks , books or magazines , toilet paperand last but very important ... my ground blind with a fold up chair.
It might sound like a bit of over kill but when your out all day from sun up to sun down and you don't want to leave the woods , well then you gotta take what you think your gonna need. |
RE: What do you take to the woods with you?
A good partner who knows how to have some fun.
|
RE: What do you take to the woods with you?
In the truck, beer, beer, and maybe one more beer. Always like to have extra to offer up if the occasion presents itself.
|
RE: What do you take to the woods with you?
I agree with RDhunter. Everything but the kitchen sink, I leave it in the truck with the 4 wheeler, chainsaw, ice chest, and about seven changes of close I NEVER use.
|
RE: What do you take to the woods with you?

eight diaphragm calls(most of them preston pittman calls, they're the best sounding calls i've ever used), slate call, box call, crow call, owl hooter, facemask, camo gloves, water bottle, extra shells, andsoon an avery fastbreak ground blind. i think thats about it, all of it crams nicely into a lightweight camo backpack.

RE: What do you take to the woods with you?
of course a small sporting goods store's supply of calls, and now this year i will be hauling in the pretty boy and pretty girl, depending on the situation anyway. I'm gonna keep my 2 featherflex hens in my vest too, just in case it turns into a running day. facemask, gloves, THERMACELL (almost as important as my gun), extra shells, tp,I like to keep a camo poncho in my vest, b/c its easier to just drape myself in the poncho than have to put on a packable rainsuit. snacks, blind netting, some paracord, knife, SOG multitool and an orion cap light(green light)
the original poster asked about whats in the truck??? holy crap that would take days. but the basics are: extra clothes(especially socks) camera, gps, more turkey calls, my pop up blind, folding chair for the blind and a big comfy one for camp, more food, more shells, cooler (beer and water), tools, first aid kit and more tp and then a tent, sleeping bag and firewood if i'm staying the night. |
RE: What do you take to the woods with you?
Power Crystal and lil deuce slateswith a purple heart striker and plastic flat-tipped lil deuce striker. Slik stick, enough mouth calls to choke a whale, box call if it's windy, face paint, razor sharp knifeto cutbranches for cover, peanut butter crackers (or cheese on wheats if I'm feelin "healthy"), 5 extra 3 1/2 inch federal shells, and a can of straight skoal for walkin. If you got more than that, you'll think too long and too hard on which call to use when or other stuff, and by then, he's figured you out. My philosophy, KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid.

RE: What do you take to the woods with you?
I dropped the vest and went to a butt pack. I carry 3-5 mouth calls, 2 slates and 1-2 box calls, locator calls, anti-acid, motrin, TP(Wet wipes actually), two bottles of water, shells, leatherman, a few snacks, binocs, seat, dekes, Gerber hand saw and pruners. I also carry an orange bag (newspaper cover) for the turkey's head and 2 rubber bands. I am sure there is more, but I can't think what else.
|

RE: What do you take to the woods with you?
The last guy on page said Pruning Shears. I was thinking those are a small Hatchett to cut small Cedars for a blind? Don't any Men drink Coffee???
Its GooooooDddd with Donuts while you are waiting for that first gobble! |
RE: What do you take to the woods with you?
Years ago when I first started turkey hunting I took only a mouth call, a shot gun and three shells. The system worked quite well; however, now what I carry looks like a section out of Cabela's Catalog loaded on an ATV. It is amazing how many more "Things" are required to harvest a turkey these days....

I know I carry way more than I need. Seems like I carry all this stuff in and I usually grab my "tried-and-true" calls that always get them gobbling. I do take too much...

RE: What do you take to the woods with you?
Tom Kelly claims in Tenth Legion that he is the "best in the world" at spooking gobblers off the roost by deficating under thier roosting tree. I personally make sure that I bring the tp everytrip in the woods, because, like Tom Kelly I always have to go once I get a cup of coffee and a quarter mile of walking. So, TP is always in my vest.
In addition, 1.) pruners 2.) bug spray 3.) head net 4.) gloves 5.) shells/Arrow 6.) license 7.) pen 8.) crow call 9.) peacock call 10.) hawk screamer 11.) camp caller slate 12.) custom call glass 13.) personally made double glass call 14.) primos power crystal 15.) about 6 different strikers 16.) about 8 differnt mouth calls 17.) primos call care thingamabob- scrapes glass, slate, cleans striker tips, chalk. 18.) some old box call that was home-made, sounds great 19.) albuterol inhaler- asthmatic 20.) water bottle 21.) Cabela's Super Tatr Vest 22.) Gun/Bow 23.) Gate keys 24.) Blackberry- Yes, I even e-mailed my bishop while turkey hunting last year. It was great! He thought I was working[8D] optional items: Coffee thermos in the Jeep Decoys, depending on the situation and plan binoculars blind- several kinds, again depending on the hunt video camera- if I'm calling for someone else Dead Turkey!!!!!!!:D |
RE: What do you take to the woods with you?
Other than calls...
Flashlight, extra shells, some snacks, pop, binoculars |
RE: What do you take to the woods with you?
No coffee for me just plain old water for me or maybe a pepsi as well...
|
RE: What do you take to the woods with you?
Learned the hard way about TP had to waste a perfectly good long sleeve undershirt.
I take extra rubberbands for tags and to keep box call quiet. I also take a big trash bag to cross rivers on my way in and out, easier than carrying bulky waders. |
RE: What do you take to the woods with you?
I take alot of water...i'm a run&gun kinda guy and i like to keep moving on them till,i know i have them...i also take 2 slate calls, 1 box call...and a Crow call.....for shock gobbling when they shutup and are comming in ...Honkers41
