Mossberg 835 vs 535

RE: Mossberg 835 vs 535
Get the 835...The barrel is overbored to 10 gauge...My buddy has one and it throws a great pattern out to 50 yards with the Winchester Supreme 3 1/2 inch shells...It also does well with the Federal Premium 2 oz turkey loads, he used number 5s in both...
When you fire it, hang on!!! And wear your ear plugs!!!:D |
RE: Mossberg 835 vs 535
Main differences....
835 is overbord, as nchawkeye said. 835 comes in synthetic and laminate camo (both synthetic and laminate is camo) 835 in laminate camo is a heavier gun that 835 in synthetic camo 535 is synthetic camo only (not laminate camo) 535 is not overbored. 535 rear sight is different than 835. (both have adjustable sights, but 535 is different) I sholdered both guns and looked at the difference this weekend and Basspro. Ended up buying the 835 thumbhole laminate camo because less forend noise and it was a little heavier. Makes recoil a bit easier. |

I brought my 835 11 years ago, and I use it for turkey only, and I woudn't trade it in, and like nchawkeye stated it patterns great out to 50 yards with the Winchester Supremes 3.5" #5

RE: Mossberg 835 vs 535
Barry...I just called my buddy, he bought the gun used and doesn't know what choke it has, it was in it when he bought it...He checked it this past weekend and says there are 15 pellets in the vitals on a HS Strutt turkey target and that it was 50 yards....He is assuming it was the choke that came with the gun when sold new...

RE: Mossberg 835 vs 535
My 835 came with various chokes, including the extra full turkey choke, that is what I use and it is great

RE: Mossberg 835 vs 535
Bassprotold me over the phone today that the 835 is $460 and the 535 is $300. I figure I should spend the money and get the better of the two. I may just wait till later in the year to pick one up. I plan on picking up a Bowtech General in the next few weeks...well when ever they get another one in. If I also buy a new gun my wife may shoot me with it. Thanks for all your inputs

RE: Mossberg 835 vs 535
I have 2 835's and they are great. My main turkey gun is a camo 835 with tri-viz sights and a mossberg x-full choke. It shoots win 3 1/2" 2 1/4 oz 4's real good. It patterns incredibly well. I've taken quite a few turkeys with it. 2 of them at extreme ranges (won't say how far)(not bragging, condoning, or encouraging). It just happened that way.

I have the same set up as okgobbler and love it for turkey hunting. I will say with 3.5" Win Supremes it kicks harder than my .300WSM - but patterns are great

RE: Mossberg 835 vs 535
i just bought the 835 turkey gun today, with out the thumbhole stock, in mossy oak.it was 400 at bass pro
can't wait to go pattern it, heard nothing but good things about it. Haven't even had it in the woods yet, but i'm sure it will be nice simply bc the 20'' barrel. I've been hauling a 28''bbl benelli for the last several years, it's now going to be strictly for the ducks. |
RE: Mossberg 835 vs 535
No doubt the 835 is for my money the best gun short of a 10 gauge for turkey hunting. Light weight, fairly inexpensive, throws great patterns, kicks like a mule, short barrel available... everything a great turkey gun should have!
I shoot a pure gold .670* with Winchester Elite Extended Range HD #6. And yes it will absolutely smash a turkey at 50 yards..... to the tune of 129 pellets in a 12" circle.... it will also readily miss turkeys inside 20 yards.... where all 420 some odd pellets are going to be in a circle about the size of a baseball. Edit: Original read .690 choke... its a .670. |
RE: Mossberg 835 vs 535
try the carlson's dead coyote over 50 pellets at 45 yards in the head using winchester extended range 6 shot in 3 1/2 inch awesome choke

RE: Mossberg 835 vs 535
I used to have the 835, as said its a great turkey gun for the money. It kicks like a mule with a 3.5 mag :Dbut will kill a bird at 50 yards

RE: Mossberg 835 vs 535
I just bought a 535 last week. I finally got to shoot it today and it shoots pretty good. I put a .660 Rhino on it and shot the 3.5", 2.25 oz of 4x5x7hevishot load from nitro. At a measured 40 yards I was putting between 220 and 230 hits in a 10" circle. I'm glad I was shooting it from a lead sled rest. I shot it a few times freehanded and she is a beast to hang on to.

bamaturk
I was wondering if anyone ot there had anything good to say about the 535. I have had an 835 in the past and really liked it, but Im just not sure the extra 160 bucks is worth it. Thanks for your input |
