New to turkey hunting,
What mouth calls do you recommend to a rookie?

I'd say any double reed call would work fine. I've heard people say a single reed is best but I personally don't see it. If you're just starting out, trying to get tone from a sigle reed can hard because you don't have the second reed to break or as some say, roll over. Hope this helps ;)

Yeah I'd recommened some sort of a double reed.

Yep I started on a double reed and a few weeks later jumped up to a triple reed. Try Quaker Boy mouth calls. They are easy to use and learn on.

I would say as the others a double reed to start would work great

Agree with the double reed comments. Make sure you get one that doesn't have any cuts in the reeds though. That adds a degree of difficulty. I would recommend an HS Double D or Raspy Old Hen.

General rule is the more reeds and the more cuts in the reeds the harder they are to blow.

Get one and practice A LOT. It was a year and a half before I was really comfortable with them.

To practice get a CD from one of the call manufacturers, put it in your vehicle and practice while driving. You can listen and practice at the same time and you won't bother anyone while doing it. Another tip is to make a tape or CD of yourself calling then play it back and listen to it. You really don't know how you sound until you have taped it and played it back.

dDouble reed is fine but practice hard and oftenI have used them for years and i can now make any sound you want from clucks to gobbles its the ticket when they get close good luck

Totally disagree with the double comments. Get a triple with cuts and you will learn how to call just fine if not better. You will get sounds on any of them but with the 3 reeds you can get better sounds right away. If you keep it in your mouth and practice you can move your tongue around and put more or less pressure, move your tongue in and out, side to side to find the best sounds. Remember to use the air from the diaphragm not just blow it from your mouth. Like huffing air on a pair of glasses. After some time you may be able to constrict the air with your throat and make it a little higher pitched for the begining of the yelp then open it up for the back end. Good luck.
