All Around Diaphrams

If you had to choose only one diaphram to take in the woods, which would it be?

It would be a double reed call with no cut. Double reeds are very versatile for me. Purrs, yelps, clucks, cackles and cutscan all be done with them. When you start adding cuts like "V's"in the reedI lose the ability to make certain calls.

Might get a wild hair and take a Sadler McGraw though.... love that call.

Ya know a friend of mine really likes those QB Old Boss Hens as well but I can't seem to make them work for me. I like those new QB foam fit calls though.

While reading this the phrase "Dance with the one that brung you" came to mind...and thinking about which diaphram if I only had one....count another vote for QB's Old Boss Hen.

Haha... talk about being poor... when I was a kid and learning how to use diaphram calls I got one of my Dad's old ones. It was a Perfection, but was cut exactly like an Old Boss Hen. When I hit the age of about 14 I bought one because that Perfection was about 7 years old. Until I was given a Lil'Deuce 2 for my 16th birthday that OBH was the only call I owned. I think I've probably gone through a dozen of them now, and I still always have one with me doing seminars or calling. I guess its just what I learned with, so because I'm so familiar with it... hey just like JoeA just wrote.... dance with the one you brought!

Any triple reed...
Ya know, when I got my packet from the NWTF for joining, they sent me a 3 reed call from Primos. I'm not sure what the name of this call is but it has grey tape, three reeds with two split "V's". One split V on the short reed and a split V on the middle reed. The longest reed is plain. I'll admit that this is probably the best mouth call that I have now. Sure, I have some Hooks calls that sound as good as any mouth call but for a call that does it all, this Primos call, whatever it's name is, gets it done! Now if I could only find more!

EDIT: I just looked and I believe that I have the Double Diamond call.

Another vote for HS Strut Cuttn 2.5

RE: All Around Diaphrams

I have tried lots (but not all!) of them.

I've had tremendous success running 2 different calls from 'Talkin Stick' game calls. A4 reed Split -V in the topreed called the Black Beard (black tape and thin green latex), and a 3 reed split-V called the Vixen (orange tape (smart idea! and green latex - this one gives a higher pitch)the only thing I can't do on it is kee-kee but any old 2 reed without a cut will work for that. Very nice yelps, cutts, cackles, whineseasy for me to control pitch and volume and the purrs...............they have closed the deal several times in the last 2 years and despite my poor treatment they last a long time as well. On my 4th right now but I have 1/2 dozen for back-up.......just in case you know.

Check em out if you are a like me and have spent a small fortune trying to find the one that works just right;

I love the versatility ofa cuttin type reed cut. I personally only use HS strut diaphrams. The best on the market in my opinion. If I had to pick only one I would take the HS Cuttn 2.5. With a little practice you can make any vocalization easily with any of the cutting reeds but this has been my favorite over the years.
