RE: Decoys do the job?
A good friend of mine stated to me once, that decoys while not 100% effective all the time, they do add "illusion" to the hunt!! A gobbler hears your calls, works in, and then spot's your decoy. To him, it completes the brain process that a hen is actually there, was doing the calling, and is waiting for him to show up. Like some of the other's have stated, I won't leave home without mine either!! I have found out the hard way that in late spring, when the foliage is really heavy, and the field grass is getting much higher that when the season first started. I have a tendency to keep the decoys inside my decoy bag and make the bird come looking for me. Most times, he can't see them at this time of the season due to the heavy foilage.

ORIGINAL: kdsberman On TV, they come right to the decoys every single time. That wont happen every single time. Good luck to you whatever you decide. |
RE: Decoys do the job?
I have hunted them with and without decoys and yes, I believe they help.
I use a locater call to to get an answer, a turkey call to get them started in the right direction and decoys to bring them into range.... To my knowledge I have never had a gobbler spook from decoys and I do believe I have had gobblers come in across big open fields that might not have approached without seeing the decoys. Use a love triangle, set them at the distance you want to shoot and face the decoys towards the shooter. I like decoy that have good real looking eyes, but don't go for all the new marketing gimmicks, i. e. gobblers mounting hens, real feathers, rainbow colors...not because I do not believe they will work. I just believe all the fu fu is not needed. |
RE: Decoys do the job?
I agree with what Everyone has said. Sometimes they work so well you dont even need a call and sometimes a turkey will come from a mile to your call and the second he sees the decoy he will turn and walk away. Those are the extreme cases but have happened to me and probably most everyone else on here. I think every turkey hunter should own decoys, and use them at certain times. Then there are times when they should be left in the truck. But I never leave home without mine.
