CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
IF YOU DON'T HAVE A CODY GLASS CALL YOU MUST GO BUY ONE! i WOULD NOT GO INTO THE WOODS WITHOUT ONE!
I bet "Bear Bryant" would have been a "Turkey Hunting Warrior!" |
RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
That's what I kept hearing. I finally got one as a present this year. Maybe mine is a fluke, but I have much better glass calls that cost much less. Of course I don't have the 8 month waiting list musical grade mohagony one.

Duckrivergobbler, I could'nt agree more.
I have a Cody Slate, absolutly love it. Last year was the first year for it, used it to tag 3 Gobblers. |
RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
TS SCOTT, HOPE THEY DIDN'T BUY U THE $19 CODY CALL FROM WALMART. GO TO BASS PRO $35. IF IT IS THAT ONE SEND IT BACK. SOMETING MUST BE WRONG WITH IT.
I bet "Bear Bryant" would have been a "Turkey Hunting Warrior!" |
RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
I ALSO HAVE THE CODY SLATE CALL. PRO BASS $35. IT IS A LITTLE LOWER PITCHED YHAN THE GLASS. IT IS THE SECOND FRICYION CALL I PULL OUT OF MY VEST. I KILLED FOUR LONGBEARDS LAST YEAR USSING THOSE PLUS MY DIAPHRAM CALLS. ONE LONGBEARD HAD DOUBLE SPURS! THEY ARE LIKE THE AMERICAN EXPRESS CARD... " I WON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT THEM!"
I bet "Bear Bryant" would have been a "Turkey Hunting Warrior!" |
RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
I have both a Cody slate and glass and like TScott, I own lots of better calls. They we're the first "custom" calls I bought and now, compared to other calls is my collection, they just don't seem very custom. Nontheless, they are good calls, worth the price I suppose. If anyone out there has their eye on a Cody friction call, I'd suggest you consider spending an extra $10 and get a call from Blodgett. Now those are some fine turkey fiddles.

RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
Been using Cody calls now for about 9 years and like you DRG I'll never be in turkey woods without them. I cracked the pot on my slate a few years back and Bill replaced it for free. So not only are they great calls but the customer service is just as good. Good luck this season

RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
Yes. Try the Blodgett double trouble. I have a cody,Blodgett, and Petes. I like all 3 they all 3 sound different.

RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
Are they a great call?...hell yeah...I own one...are they the best....absolutely not....there have been times while in the woods that gobblers have not responded to my Cody as they have to another call. That's one reason why I don't go into the woods with only one. Sometimes it's the River Valley Fall Harvest box, sometimes it's the Quaker Boy Mini Boat, sometimes it's the Cody Envy Slate, sometimes it's the River Valley Glass....sometime's it's the mouth call and sometime's it's the no name....never assume one is better than another.....most are effective, some can't produce sound but still bring them in......I'd never make such a broad statement as "this is the best call"....will they work, hell yeah...but they are never the best....sometimes they just don't work and it's time to try something different.

...THE BEST CALL,is the one thats calls the turkey in for you,
or me,and all that i have dont have cody written no where on them, but they are the best for me....i think...:)... ..JESUS IS COMING BACK BE READY... |
RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
I agree 100% Rob !!In fact some days it doesn't matter what name is on the call, cause once inawhile ole gobbler just kicks your a$$!!Confidence dictates what we take to the field developed over positive results in the turkey woods, and obviously for drg Cody glass fits the bill!!Its a good reccomemdation but unless we've tried every call on the market how can we say its the best?I've always felt that a turkey call no matter what the name is only as good as the user and his ability in understanding the overall mechanics of the call!Sure some calls are made better than others but a well made call isn't going to reach its full potential until its in the hands of somebody who knows how to prepare and run it!And I've seen and heard to many times those cheap little 9 and 10 dollar surfaces sing some pretty sweet music in those hands that know how to work them!!

RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
I understand what everyone is saying but maybe when someone says that this or that is the best call they are meaning that it sounds to them what a turkey sounds like or maybe they are refering to the quality of the call. I grew up no more than 5 miles from the home of Bill Zearing, the maker of Cody Calls and have been familier with them since about day one. And by far for the price they are some of the best made today. I think $35 for a custom call is a steal. I own a couple including the so called cheap Envy that Wal-Mart sells and I love them, to my ears they sound great. Now maybe one of those $100 custom made music grade slates may sound better, but for $35 you can't beat the quality. Hey maybe i'm a bit partial because Cody calls are from my old stomping grounds but still give em a try. They must be popular for a reason or they wouldn't be sold in national catalogs, and won as many awards as they have.

RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
Well i can tell ya one thing, Go to the Harrisburg show this sat and you wont be able to get next to his booth. That should tell ya something!!!!

RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
I had a cody mouth call and it was great. I called in a few birds with it, and then it fell out of my pocket and I lost it.

RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
Here's something that i've learned, over the past few years i bought the following.
Cody II $35.00 Cody World Class $65.00 Cody Spec 1 $75.00 Roberts bros $40.00 Here's the thing,i can use the same striker on all 4 calls and they sound the same, and whats even worse is that a friend of mine bought a HS strut call ($15.00) i think it was the Black widow and it sounds just as good as any of my calls. RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
I'm confused about something...Did they degrade the Envy to make a cheap call for Walmart....I bought my Envy(wood pot) many years ago from Cody's booth at Harrisburg.. and then it was in upwards of $40.

RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
I DO BELIEVE THAT THE CODY ENVY IS A CHEAPER QUALITY CALL THAN THE REST OF THE CALLS THAT THEY PRODUCE.
I bet "Bear Bryant" would have been a "Turkey Hunting Warrior!" |
RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
Rob,
I believe the Envy that's sold thru Wal-Mart is a single glass version. The original Envy has a wood sounding board under the slate or glass calling surface, just like a Spec I, while the Cody II and World Class have glass sounding boards. PBB Pick a hair.....or a caruncle!! |
RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
Duck, you missed my question.
PABeard....like I said, when I bought my Envy slate several years ago, it was around $40 from the Harrisburg stand. It's a quality wood pot and I don't think it's the cheap model I see posted about. I have'nt seen the Walmart one. Did they cheapen the product or is it just the single glass your talking about. I did pick one up and use it at Gander and it seemed cheap. Is this their marketing ploy to get their name out in a less expensive call? I really think they make a quality call and it'd be a shame to see a cheapened product....not a good move as far as reputation goes...I usually associate Cody with quality. Good Luck and Good Shooting Rob |

RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
I was at the show today and was talking to Bill. He told me that all his world class calls are hand made and that they are made 1 at a time. He says he only make a limited amount every year. I bought mine about 2 or 3 years ago and payed 75.00 for it now they are going for 125.00. While i was there i had bill match another striker to mine becuase I lost mine last year. I know one thing for sure the world class call that i have is top notch. One the best sounding slates i have!!!!

RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
I have 3 Cody calls myself. I have the World Class glass, CodyII slate and the envy glass which I bought on clearance from walmart for $10.. The difference between the World Class and the envy is unbelievable! Night and day! I would agree I would not go in the woods without my Cody but I would not limit myself to just that call. I also had times the gobbler would not respond to the slate or world class but hammered back at a box or mouth call. What ever the turkey wants is what he is going to get!

RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
Well I've heard it all now. I never in my life thought I would hear someone refer to Cody Calls as cheaply made. They are far from that. A high quality call all around, throughout all their models. Maybe some of you don't know but Cody Calls are not part of some hunting super company like MAD or Lohman or even Hunters Specialties. They are a small Mom and Pop organization. As for the marketing ploy comment. When you are a company this size you can't afford to have much of a marketing strategy. Like I posted earlier I grew up only about 5 Miles from the home Bill Zearing is based out of and makes his calls. And I know they type of people that come from this area. People from the Halifax area are hard working, honest and down to earth, and not out to make a quick buck by making an inferior product like some larger "City" based companies. I was at the Harrisbug show and spoke with many of the representatives at the Cody Booth (Booth was packed as usual) and decided to buy a CodyII slate with one of thier Bocote wood strikers and the usual Heavy Hickory striker that comes with it (wow the Bocote is a great striker, It sounds great on everything I use it on). The gentleman who helped me out offered to match up, my call with my strikers rather that just grab a call off the rack and hand it to me. And boy did he do a great job matching everything up what a sound. But how many call makers do that for you, maybe some of the little ones do but you deffinitly do not get that kind of service from the large makers like Primos or Hunter's Specialties. All most manufacturers do is grab a call off the shelf and hand it to you, and take your money and run. I have come to respect just a few call companies, and those are the ones that have provided excellent customer service, and by far Cody Calls are at the top of my list. Sorry about this bieng so long just had to get up on my soapbox and defend one of the Hometown Boys.

I do have to disagree. What you say I have no doubt is true for the upper line. But take a look at the new glass call that sales for $20.00 at wally world and $25.00 at Midwest, Wing Supply & the Cody homepage. It is a cheap call. The sound is not that good, there are tool marks all over the call. Yes I know you get what you pay for. But for $15.00 a H.S. Strut or Knight & Hale or a Primos will out call that call anyday. I do think that Cody is trying to do a nice thing by making a cheaper call for the little people like me who can't afford $50.00-$125.00 on one of their other calls. It just needs to be a little better, that's all. You can read about the call on Cody's home page. http://www.codyturkeycalls.com/ "A vote is like a rifle: its usefulness depends upon the character of the user." RE: CODY CALLS ARE THE BEST!
TScott I will agree with you that yes Cody has made an attempt to make a call line that is affordable. But I still think that these affordable calls like the Envy Glass call that wal-mart sells (By the way I own this one and love it, I called in two monster gobblers at once with this one last season) are still a notch or two above most others priced relatively the same with maybe the exception being the Knight and Hale Old Yeller Sla-tek a great call all around which I think ranks right up with the affordable cody calls. I just don't think they are a bad as some people are making them out to be. Also a big factor is what everyone thinks a turkey sounds like. We all have our own ideas on that and while I may use a call by cody and say it sounds great and then pickup a primos call and think it sounds like junk, but on the other hand TScott you may hear something completely different with your ears and think the Primos call is great and the Cody is not that great. And then you throw in the fact that different turkeys like different sounds. (Sometimes we all know how frustrating that can be)I appreciate your opinion, it's good to have a nice friendly disagreement once in a while I hope you din't take what I said here as being mean or nasty, I just feel strongly about certain things and sometimes can be pretty opinionated, just ask my wife.
