Winter Kill
Has any one been finding dead turkeys? I live in Wisconsin and we got alot of snow this year. I have been seeing a few turkey scratching on the road side, lately. These birds do not look healthy. I have not seen the flocks out in the fields feeding, so I am kind of worried. I am going to start shed antled hunting soon and I think I will be finding dead birds also.

RE: Winter Kill
They are pretty tough and can survive adverse conditions well. The only thing that really hurts them is long periods of deep soft snow where they can't walk around. We have had some years here in Ct where there has beenpretty much complete snow cover for 110 days or better and they still manage to get by.

There's a flock of about 20 hens that has spent the winter around me. I saw them yesterday. They look fine.

I doubt you'll find dead birds. Maybe just piles of feathers. Damn yotes!

RE: Winter Kill
I think 2008 will be one of the best turkey seasons we've ever had in TN, where I hunt, we've been seeing birds earlier this month, in November, and October, at times when we'd almost never see them, but they're around, so I am really pumped for this season!!!!
I shot a jake last season, but this year I'm hoping to get a full-size gobbler. |
