Brand New 870
Well, I did it. I traded the mossy 835 tactical turkey for my new 870 express supermag.:D I KNOW their are a lot of opinions out there but before you mossberg people get bent out of shape I still have another 835.;) I have just always regreted betting rid of my only 870.:( My question now is what next for turkey. The new 870 has a 26" barrel and I will be starting from scratch with the whole turkey set-up. Any suggestions? Also, the gun is matte black all over, anyone know of a good camo dipper?
Thanks. |
RE: Brand New 870

RE: Brand New 870
My 11-87 is all Matte - why camo?
Ihave never ever had a problem of spookin turkeys! Now I know it is a bit more moola but ya want two guns in one - I bought a cantleever barrel for mine - can hunt deer and turkey as I scoped it. Want to have a shot gun for ducks = go back to yer 26" barrel. Want go back to deer or turkey - swap barrels and that puppy is still spot on! JW |
RE: Brand New 870
JW is right, there is no need to camo your gun. The matte black will work perfectly fine. I used one for years and had no problems with it.If cost is an issue, you may want to try the undertaker xtra full choke. You can get one for 20 bucks. I used one with my 870 supermag and it patterened well. I now use the Jellyhead because it patternsthe loads I usebetter with my 870 SPS-T thumbhole. Make sure though, if you shoot hevi shot type shells, you get the undertaker that is designed to shoot hevi shot. This includes Win. Xtnd, Fed. flight control, hevi 13's, and Rem. HD's. There are several types of undertakers, all around $20.

RE: Brand New 870
Yeah, Nitros will slam em, but they are so damn expensive. How much are they running these days?
|
RE: Brand New 870
Yep, just what I have been reading. Jellyhead and Nitro 4x5x7. Can't go wrong with a proven combination. Thanks, and camo is not a real issue, just like the camo because it seems to deter rust better.

ORIGINAL: superstrutter Yeah, Nitros will slam em, but they are so damn expensive. There is always the gun that won't fit the norm, but in most cases, you get superior results using his recommendations. |

ORIGINAL: Gamblinman You're paying not only for theshells, but all the research that Nitro Ray has done, such as testing and patterning. For thevast majority, you save money by buying the choke and shells he recommends, instead of buying and paying for different chokes and shells, trying to get the pattern you need. I know for a fact that, if given the choice, I'd buy other boxes of ammo just to see if they'll pattern good probably amounting to more than $50 per year. Heck, 2 boxes of the good stuff is more than that. Now I don't have to. I'm set.And as Gamblinman said, I'm also paying for the R&D that has went into these shells. To me, that's priceless. |
RE: Brand New 870
I'll be willing to bet I can kill just as many turkeys with the other "cheaper" premier loads.
You're willing to wager that your shells will get the job done, I'm not. I know with the Nitro loads that there willbe a dead turkey. Nitro's are available from selected sporting goods stores that carry them, Wing Supply, and of course, direct from the manufacturer. Good luck and good betting!! |

I too, know with my hevi shot or HD's, there will be many more dead turkeys. Let us know the results of your patterning with the Nitros. |
RE: Brand New 870
I just bought a box (25) of 3.5" Hevi-Shot 4x5x7's for $153. I realize that it's a lot of money for shells, but I look at it like this: I'm probably going to shoot less than 5 shells while patterning and that'll leave me 20 shells. If I shoot7 shells per year, combining patterning and hunting, that leaves me with 3 years worth of shells. That's $50 per year. I know for a fact that, if given the choice, I'd buy other boxes of ammo just to see if they'll pattern good probably amounting to more than $50 per year.
Man seven shots per year... Were you hunt in Jersey with that kind of action??? I'm sure it's public;) |
RE: Brand New 870
I figure that I'll shoot 7 shots per year based on 2-3 shots before the season starts for sighting purposes and at the most 4 shots at turkeys. That would be an outstanding season with 4 birds. Hey, as long as the permits are available I'll be slingin' Nitros this year.:D

RE: Brand New 870
Man I'm from Md and the public land hear sucks... I'm always looking for some good public land;)
|
RE: Brand New 870
I confess. I hunt private land. That'll be changing soon enough though. I hunt on a very large nursery that'll be closing within a few years. Then I'll be running around the woods like everyone else. I'm gonna enjoy it while it lasts though.
