Crystal and Glass What is the difference.

I've been seeing considerable seperation in the glass and crystal calls especially regarding strikers and which striker to use on glass and which one for crystal. All surfaces are different and sound better with different strikers but can someone tell me the difference between crystal and glass and what is crystal made from?

This is my opinion, The difference that I've seen and heard is "Real Glass" has taken the name Crystal. Now the word "Glass" is a form of Plexy Glass. Your right on the Strikers. Different strikers will give a call a different sound, some work better on one surface, over another surface. On the most part each striker is a different sounding Hen. I'm interested in the others opinions aswell on the Crystal and Glass question...BT

Funny you should ask <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> I've been doing some research in regards to the &quot;crystal&quot; that is used in turkey calls. I have found that the &quot;crystal&quot; is a man made type of glass and plexy glass. Actually it's even used to make trophys and reward plaques. Have also found that it's used for large windows and skylights since it holds off heat & cold better then glass or plexy. I've contacted one distrubter so far about pricing, but my problem is he doesn't sale it in the thickness I need. Wish I had some techincal information for ya' but this is all I have found so far. I like to use purple heart, rosewood, Wood Wise mystic stick and the hickory stinger on the &quot;crystal&quot; calls I own. The glass that I have bought to use in my calls so far has been straight up glass. I use double strength which gives more pitch then single strength glass and is also stronger. Have no idea what the major call companies use, but in the two glass calls I have made so far it sounds great. I like walnut, hickory, mystic stick and purple heart on glass. Dang sorry I just rambled.

Are you talking about regular window glass? or tempered glass? or plexi-glass? If it's really glass glass seems like you'd really have to be carefull with it to keep from breaking it.

Excellent question, crimedog. I've always wondered that, too. What's it really made of? (in layman's terms)

The reason I ask is this, the Primos Power Crystal is plexiglass, not crystal which is the reason you can use sandpaper to roughen rather than needing one of the diamond rougher or silica stones. From armchair chemistry and geology knowlage crystal is suposed to be harder than glass, for example lead crystal which makes that singing sound when you rub the edge of a expensive wine glass (which I will never own). Kinda confusing, if turkeys are so damn smart do you think we can train one to act as a decoy and call also. Seems easyer than figureing out this call question.

Yankee,
I have found several suppliers of the &quot;crystal&quot;. It's actually called Starphire and another brand is called Optiwhite (not to be confused with the teeth whitener) Most suppliers though are for windows and trophies/plaques.
