a friend of mine uses the turkey choke that comes with the gun and it works pretty well for him at 40 yards.

I use a Mossberg 500 and use their factory choke its an xxful turkey choke. It will knock a bird down at 50 yards for sure. I would trust it out a little farther. But for me the closer the better. I havent taken a shot over 50 yards yet, but I know it kills at 50. I make sure I pattern it and have found that Federal 3" Magnums 2 oz 5 shot shoot best from my gun...

How much do you want to spend? You can get the cheaper stuff for $10-$15 a box stuff or you can get the latest and greatest stuff that's $40 per box. All of these boxes have 10 shells in them, not 25 as is with a regular box of shotshells. I killed my first bird with a box of 3"Winchester Supreme#6's. The "cheap" stuff". There's nothing fancy about those except that they kill birds!

Having said that, I believe there's a trend leaning toward the "heavier than lead" shells, ei: Hevi-Shot. I've shot this stuff for geese and in my opinion, it's the best thing going. I'll definitely be shooting this stuff at turkeys this spring. It's probably best if you take baby steps right now though. Stick with lead for now, get yourself a good pattern and have fun!

Shoot whatever gives you the best pattern... When buying a choke I like the extended chokes...

I'm not sure what length barrel your Mossy has but mine with a 24" barrelproduces a great patternwith a .660 Hastings choke tube and #5 shot...A .660 choke constrictionwould be a good starting point for your gun with size#5 or 6 shot.

Try winchester and federal shells in 5 and 6 shot size. Within 40 yards those lead shells work great.

May be a few days late here, I just read it. I've got a Maverick, which is pretty much the same gun. I tried quite a few chokes and ended up with a Tru-Glo Gobble Stopper. Works great and patterns right on the head out past 50yds. I still new to turkey hunting and hunting in general, so I prefer close range shots. But, you take what you can get and sometimes they aren't going to stand 30ft in front of you waiting to die.
