Benelli Nova point of impact

I have two Benelli Novas and both have been used for turkey. The only complaint is they both shoot high at 30 yards. Have any of you come across this problem and what did you do?

I have a supernova. It hits dead on. Does it do that with other loads? What different chokes?

you might want to adjust the heel and the comb of your gun, or just aim lower.

If there turkey guns specific I would think about scoping them...;)

Or you can put a scope on it.

I havea supernova with the 26" barrel and my gun shoots high too. I have called benelli about it but they didnt give any real answers. At 30 yards I have to aim about 2" below where I want the POI to be. At 50yards I have to aim about 4" below where I want a pattern. I have shot the Carlson non ported .665 and a Primos Jelly head .655 and they both shoot high. BTW (I will be posting pics of my patterns with several different loads in the next few days)....so far the best load I have found to work is the Winchester Xtended range 3.5" 6shot with the primos jelly head, and the Remington (old school hevi shot) 3" 6 shot. Im going to put a red dot on my gun.

That red dot will help a lot. My Moss 500 shoots low and right. Remember your POI will be different with different brands/loads of shot. Set it up with the shells you will be using.

I have shot severfal different loads over the years I have hunted with these guns. Both of them shoot about 6" high at 30 yards. I shoot a kicks gobblin thunder choke. I also have a friend that has one as well and his shoots the same, 6" high. One of the novas has a 24" barrel and the other a 28". I have put a set of adjustable fiber optic sights, but the rear sightstill will not come down low enough. I really don't like aiming low, too much guess work for me. These turkeys around here are hard to hunt and I do not want to guess at anything. Thanks for the advice.

All, Take 25 B-nova's out of the box and set them up and see what sort of differences you get between guns, the reality is that there will be differences in them, they will not all shoot six inches high or low or left or right. The trick is to find out where YOUR gun hits, which you already have, you claim they shoot high.

You have 2 choices, aim low, or adjust the POI.

Here are 2 good web articles that will give you some more information. There are tons more avaiable.

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BQY/is_7_49/ai_102274467

http://www.huntingmag.com/guns_loads/why_pattern/

As mentioned, the point of impact can be adjusted if you know what you are doing but it can be a bit frustrating if you don't. Furthermore, I'm not sure if B-Nova comes stock with shims to do this or not but I know it would be difficult to shave a plastic stock!

Also, how you mount the gun, where your check touches the stock and how you look down the barrel can have change POI. This is why if you have a Nova and I have a Nova and we both shoot the same everything we might have two different POI's, shells, pellet size, barrel length don't matter.

I have an 11-87 that I've worked and worked with, like shooting Old Rem Hevi-shot out of it, it shoots low and I just aim dead on the birds head instead of lower, like jlo1 points out, this isn't optimal, but I've fired well over 150 turkey rounds through this gun and I love the pattern that I get at 40 yards. It hasn't failed me yet.

If you are more serious about this you could get a gun with an adjustable stock.

Finally, just to share, this past year I purchased the Rem 870 with the thumbhole stock and raised 'rifle' comb and it is a dream FOR ME (others might not like it). I've yet to find exactly what shell I want to shoot but Win. Supreme#5's 3in. Magnum Turkey did the trick last year quite well and I didn't have to aim high like with the 11-87.

I think getting your turkey gun to shoot is one of the most fun parts of the whole thing.

POI is the #1 most important aspect of shooting the scattergun and having it hit where you want it to hit!

Sorry for rambling, good luck!

Mine came with shims to change that.

But my SBE did shoot high - Add Tru Glo sights - mine where clamp on - a wedged shim goes under them and I do take them off.
I did not like magnetic and make sure the back ramp ALLOWS YOU TO ADJUST WINDAGE AND ELEVATION. This will solve your problem

This helped me correct that immensely. Allowed me to put the center bottomof the pattern on the base of the birds neck where the feathers stopped and skin started (waddle area). This way the exact dead center of the circular pattern was dead center on the bird's neck. The top dead center was on the head.
Now the main reason for me doing this is it is very easy to see the skin feather region on the neck - gave me a very consistent target.

To do this you need to adjust windage and elevation and is rather easy. I started at 10 yards - using trap loads and trying to punch out a orange quarter sized dot out of white card board. Once I could consistely do that I backed up to 20, 30, 40, did 50 for grins it is there! When I backed up is when I strated using my turkey loads - was less punishing using trap laods to get there. I had the gun centered - I adjusted elevation to slightly drop it to adjust the bottom center - you may not need to.
I used turkey head silloettes on 6x 11.5 paperand only counted pellet holes in the neck vertebra, skull, eye, or juglar. My rule of thumb - 8 to 12 pellets consistently hitting these is your effective killing range.
