RE: ??Red Dot..or..Crosshairs???question??
Hey totoe, I've had a Leupold Vari-X II 1x4 shotgun scope on my gun for about 10 years now. I've never regretted the day I put it on there either. I leave it on 1 power most of the time....a fixed 4x scope might be too much power for close in work with turkeys though. I don't have a red dot scope on a hunting gun, only a pistol but I'm sure you couldn't go wrong with one of those either. With the scope though, you don't have to mess with batteries and an on/off switch. Whichever you choose, it will be considerably better than open sights.

Geezzeee, Yankee, MOTT, and I have sonmething in common!! We all use the Leupold 1x4 shotgun scope!! Like MOTT, mines been on my gun for about the same amount of time!! I agree, 4x is a little to high of power for a turkey gun. With the 1x4 variable, I keep it on 2x. If I turn it down to 1x, the front of the barrel ends up being visable in the scope, which distracts me. I can't comment on the Red-Dot sights, I never used one.

Since you already have the scopes covered and I use both...
I will comment on the Red Dot. I have a couple different turkey guns with HOLOsights on them. To me, this is "the" turkey sight. Unlike a scope, it has no magnification and offers unlimited field of view and instant target acquisition. You also get none of the weird paralax and eye relief problems that some scopes can have. To me, that is what shotgun hunting is all about. (Shouldering your gun and being able to shoot instantly.) So, why not just stick with beads or fiber optic sights if a typical red dot has no magnification you ask? Well, a red dot is simply placed on the target. No matter where it is located inside the scope, if you place it on the target the target will be hit. It is a lot faster and easier to use than a double-bead system or the Tru-Glo type fiber optic sights which must be aligned. Hope that helps you with your search. P.S. I know the HOLOsight is also good for waterfowling and upland bird hunting/shooting as well in case you use your turkey gun for other things. Jeremiah "Pro" |
