For a slate call all you want is scotch bright, if it were alum, or crystal you would make it rougher with sandpaper or stone. For alum I use 40 grit on one half and 80 on the other half. Crystal I use 120-150 depending on the sound I want (rougher is raspyier). Knight and Hale SLA-TEk is different, I'm still playing with it to get a desired sound. The goal is to get different raspyness and the different volume is dependent with the surface type.

Green Scotch-Brite is all you need for slate. I use rough sandpaper for glass and crystal, and finer paper for aluminum. Scotch-Brite will work well for cleaning striker tips too.

The Scotch-brite works for my aluminum as well as my slate.

I use green Scotch-Brite on my aluminum call and have never had a problem either. I might rough it up with fine sandpaper at home once in awhile but in the field I only take the Scotch-Brite.

I dress my friction calls in high heels for some extra sass. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> <img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle>

Seriously, I do it like this...

ScotchBrite = Slate
Sanding Stone = Crystal, Sla-Tek/Ceramic
Sandpaper = Aluminum

Striker Tips... All get ScotchBrite

Question to go along with that is.....do you scrub/rub in 1 direction or in circles or do you stand on your head and just rub in the direction you fall? Does it matter long as you get sound?
