looking to purchase first turkey gun....

Im about to get a gun and was looking for some input on peoples choices and opinions. Im only going to buy a pump gun (budget in mind). I really have my heart set on a Mossberg 835 or the Remington SPS super max mag gobbler (looks expensive though). I have had both the mossberg 500's in the past and the Remington 870's and pretty good luck. Also what your opinions on barrel length 20, 22, 24?

I would go for the 835 perfect turkey pump gun.;)

I have a 835 and its an ok gun, but I like my 870 better. Barrel length, 24 inches is what I like.

I think Mossberg makes a nice gun, however, I personally cannot stand the rattling pump action. The Binelli Nova has the same problem.

My personal choice is the Reminfton 870 Super Magnum, with a 23" rifle sighted barrel. I prefer the rifle sighted barrel simply because it forces you to keep your head down on the stock to line the sights up, you're not going to shoot high or low; you're going to hit what you aim at downrange. After you sit for 15 or 20 minutes waiting for a turkey to come in, that gun gets awful heavy and it's real easy to peek up over the barrel and shoot high. It won't happen with a properly aligned rifle sight.

thanks guys this is excellent info. You know you bring up a great point about the load forearm on the mossberg, I do recall my 500 being rattly.

Cant go wrong with a 870!!! I like a short barrel... 26" would be the max... I have 4 turkey guns and I like the 870 SP-turkey with the rifle sights;)

thanks guys for your feedback. I went to GM tonight and I have to say Im quite impressed with the Benelli Nova pump gun. Price seems ok, im just not sure if I care for the sights. I liked how the Mossberg has the rifle style sights versus the benellis waterfowl style sights.

I have one of the original 870 Express guns, I love it. That being said, the 28" barrel plus an extended choke is a bit much for the turkey woods. I'm going to pick up my friends lightly used 835 and check out a shorter, lighter gun for this upcoming season.

I ended up buying the Super nova now I need to find out what load I should shoot ( lead or hevishot) and then choose a choke.

My Benelli with Winchester #4 -3 inch - 3.5 was a waste of money - patterned real nice and I added a Hastings 0.663 choke.

I tried heavy shot and was not impressed.

But you will want to try different loads and establish you Maximum yardage. Just my opinion though - anything over 40 yards - well you are missing what turkey hutning is really about. Call the bird up close and personal! :)

Am proud to say to date - for the number of birds I have taken - my average is 22 yards.

What do you do if a gobbler plays hard to get and will only come into 35-40 yards??? Do you just lethim walk or do you take him???

I hunt Pressured Gobblers... And like I've said before... These birds are tough!!! I cant take a chance on playing aroundhopeing he will come into 20 yards and let me get that so called "close shot" that you talk about...

If a gobbler is coming in and he looks like he's not on full alert, then I'll keep a bead on him and let him come closer... but 90% of the time there on full alert and looking hard for the hen makeing the calls... If he is in range and I've got the shot I take it...

SOUNDS LIKE MINE AND YOUR TURKEYS ARE A LOT DIFFERENT;)

You want to talk about rattle I have an old Mossberg 500 from the early 1970's, back when they only had one slide rail.

I had a Moss 835 Ulti-Mag and I didn't like it very much. I sold it and got the Remington 870 SPS-T with thumbhole and I love the gun. The Remington 870 is the most popular selling shotgun. Definitely take a look at the thumbhole stocks...they cost a little more, but I think that they are worth it in my opinion. I am glad that I got rid of the Moss and got a Remington instead. Both good guns, but I prefer the Remington.

sounds like your 35 yard shot still qualifies as within range to him, gotta read man. as far as the difference in the turkeys, the only real difference i can see is that JWs birds likely dont have 20,000 acres of woods to retreat to andhide in. Now go write that down in your public land jernal.[8D]
