RE: chufas

Chufas are great for turkey. In Florida, you can plant anytime during the spring. Just south of Atlanta, I plant them around the second or third week of April. They do well in almost any soil but sandy or soft soil is best for the turkeys to dig the nuts. If you have tougher soil then disk them up a little at a time during the winter for the turkeys. I got the order form for the NWTF's annual chufa sale today. They sell the first bag at almost 50% off and subsequent bags at higher price but still a good deal. This is the first time that I have bought from the NWTF. I usually order from my local seed store. One note of caution: Hogs LOVE those nuts. I don't have the problem but friends tell me that hogs will wipe out a chufa plot in no time.
