Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default beginner (calls)

I have never been turkey hunting before put am excited to go this year. What type of call (slate, box, or diaphragm) would you recommend for a beginning hunter.

Thanks

I'd start off with a box, then a slate, and then a diaphragm. Some master diaphragm calling faster than others and some (like me) just stick with a box and slate because I've gotten great results.

Find a tape or an internet site that has turkey sounds and practice duplicating that call. Get out in the woods to scout and hear those same sounds in the wild.

Good luck.

Hello BD, I am also a beginner (2 seasons) and I found a slate the easiest. However wont work hardly at all in the rain or even just damp weather. These guys no more alot more than me but I would say get one of each and a glass type friction and spend equal amounts of time with all of them as they all have advantages and disadvantages over each other. Only thing I havent tried is a push pin type which just may be the easiest but also takes all the fun out of it (to me anyway). I still cant purr correctly with a box and when I try to use a diaphram every living creature within a mile runs like hell! But I'm still practicing.
If you think you are excited now just wait......

Just do an advanced search on Yahoo or google for "turkey sounds" and browse a few until you see one you like.

The above link has some really good turkey sounds.
