RE: Indiana State Record Turkey (weight NWTF)
full mount (gobbling) Iset up onthe edge of a cedar thicket..joing an open field. About at daylight I let out a couple of soft clucks and was answered back to immediatly! My Dad was set up on the other side of this open field. The "Ole Boy" let out one more gobble before entering the field. Oddly enough the Bird was within 50 yards of my Dad but because of the angle the bird was standing in the field my Dad could not see him. I sat still and crossed my fingers that my Dad would see him and get a shot at him..all of a sudden 6 of his girlfriends came out of the thicket 20 yards from me. Needless to say he almost broke his neck gettin over to them. By the time he reached them he was about 70 yards away from me and double that from my Dad. I let out a couple of aggresive clucks but he payed no attention..once again I let out another cluck and 2 hens came my way (very cautiously) I let out a couple of soft purrs and here he came! I thought he was still out of reach but I managed to get to my rangefinder and found out he was 46 yards. I knew my Remington 1187 had made shots like this before. As he and the hens looked away I slowly raised my gun and set one off! I looked up and saw nothing except the hens leaving the field...in a hurry! As I hustled over where I shot I saw nothing..I was worried that I had not made the shot..I looked over to the edge of the thicket and saw him flopping around. I knew after one look at the big boy I had a whopper!...did I mention I was VERY PROUD of him??? Thanks for all the Great comments!
