thinking of buying 835

I am thinking of buying a Mossberg 835 ulti mag. Was just going to get the 500 but my shop teacher said he could get me a good deal on it. Just a little more than the wholesale price. What do you all think about this gun. Do you think I would be better off with the 500? I'm not a very big guy 15 years old 5'11 and about 135 pounds. Dont know how bad the kick would be. Cause sometimes the dogs bark can be worse than his bite.

First let me say welcome to the board. There's lots of great info here and most better than mine. I have a 835 and it packs a pretty good punch, but you don't have to shoot the 3 1/2's in it now. Some guys shoot the 3" with better results than the 3 1/2 anyway. You could shoot the 2 3/4 shells until you feel like moving to something bigger.

you can shoot the smaller shells like HighKnob says. The main thing is that you are big enough to hold the gud steady. If you can do that the by all means get the 835, it will give you some growing room.

Just a B.A.D. experence on my part, but from my point. Stay away from the 835 ultra-mag."BIG TROUBLE"
I had one and never had anything except trouble, would not reload a shell when the empty came out.Mossberg could not fix it(sent it back two times). then got rid of it(thank goodness)
It also kicked like a full grown mule.if you shoot the 3 1/2" shells.for the kick problem you can use 2 3/4 or 3" shells and not suffer near as much.

A Browning BPS 3" will give you the better gun all the way around.
look into the guns a looooooong time befor making a decision.
I would pay for a Browning or Remington twice, befor I would take a Mossgerg for FREE!!!.

I know there are some people that feel the same about other guns also.that is why they make Mossberg,Browning, remington and savage.
Just my 2 cents,there are 98 more!!!:).

I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest

remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry.

Check out the Remington model 870 supermag before you buy an 835.

THE NRA, WHERE WOULD YOU AS A GUN-OWNER BE WITHOUT THEM.

Thanks for the help. I will have to check and see if I can get as good a deal on the 870. If I can I will probably go with it. I have heard alot of people talkinging about how the 835 will jam, but then others say they have had no problem with theirs.

Like Tree climber said there were some problem guns out there. Mossberg had some quality control problems during one span of time. I've got one of the first 835's that came out and it has performed excellant, never a gam or any other problems. I just got one of the new 835's last year and it seems as good as the first. I think Mossberg has correct the quality problems they had. They are a pretty good gun for the money. My .02

RE: thinking of buying 835

I use my 835 for dove, pheasant, turkey, and predators. And I can honestly say I have never had one problem with it. Never have one jam up, even with the 3.5". For $300 it was a great investment for me. As long as you can hold the gun correctly when you're shooting big loads the recoil is manageable, because you most likely won't be shooting a lot of 3.5" shells one after the other.

The 835 is called a poor man's 10 guage for a reason. Mossberg doesn't make the 835 with as good quality as some other gun manufacturers make that type of gun, but has a very resonable price on the gun that gets the job done If you don't need the big loads then the 500 would be alright too. There are a lot of good guns out there, it just depends a lot on the amount of money you want to spend and what you want to use it for. Good luck

have an 835 synthetic and my 11 yr old shoots 3&31/2 outta it and loves it!!! thought he'd be scared but after the first one he realized it sounded worse than it is. He's about 5' and 105 so I think you'll be fine. Only suggestion i have is if its xtra full shoot 3's first mine blows the center outta the pattern w/ 31/2's. hope this helps
