Kentucky info
 

I have a relative who is willing to let me spring hunt on their land. They have a few hundred acres in the hills of eastern Kentucky (Martin County). I have not scouted the land for turkeys but I have been there a lot growing up and it looks like some prime territory. I would be interested if anyone knows this area. Also, when is the Kentucky spring season and what is the out of state turkey permit process (is there a drawing or can anyone get one)?

Season opens April 15 unless the 15th falls on a Sunday; in that case it would open Saturday the 14th. So this year opening day will be Tuesday April 15. Season runs for 21 consecutive days. Two male/bearded turkeys per season; one per day limit.

Hunting license & spring turkey tags are available over-the-counter, no application necessary except for Land Between the Lakes quota hunts (governed by USDA Forest Service). I think prices are unchanged from last year, but haven't seen an official price list to confirm that.

I hunt several days each spring in SE Ky, Daniel Boone National Forest & Big South Fork NRRA (McCreary county). Birds generally not as plentiful as northern & western Ky, but seem more vocal & willing to travel. Probably from a combination of lighter hunting pressure than most of the state, and the terrain. The woods on those hillsides can be pretty thick; that & the natural sound barriers provided by the mountains make it necessary for them to gobble more often (my unscientific conclusion). Of course I'm assuming the terrain is similar to what I've seen in McCreary county.
