Last/First Hunt of the year
My hunting buddy and I went out on New Years Day for our last/first turkey hunt of the year. We had a real bad mast year this year. I have found a couple of trees with a couple of acorns but most of the trees were bare. As were the wild grapes and dog woods. Where we hunt it's National Forest on a north side of a good size mountain with foot hills. The National Forest has put in dozens of feeder fields and there are at least a dozen running creeks with about half a dozen ponds. We finally found "some" turkey sign at our last stop. We hit areas that always hold turkeys but saw none with no sign. I always hunt this area as does he and we have seen three turkeys during all the fall seasons. (he saw two gobblers during deer season and I saw one hen during squirrel season) Now this area is always populated with birds. Only thing I can figure is that they have moved a little bit north since the whole area we hunt is covered on the north side by fields on private property. Hope they come back before April.

tscott Thats too bad that sucess didn't happen, but then again you got out my friend. We don't have a fall season here and the weather is Cold with about a foot of snow. Someday maybe. Well you'll have a better spring I'm sure...BT

RE: Last/First Hunt of the year
Scott, if you seen the birds in that area this past spring, they will be there again this spring as well, unless some major changes took place to the landscape!! Seems the hens choose the spots for nesting purposes, so you can figure they must think that area works for them.
