RE: Whats your turkey gun?
i have a 500 and use it for all my shotgunning..from feathers to fur all in the same day..light dove loads to heavy steel loads in one day..nothing stops it..never had a problem and i shoot it alot..alot of heavy 3 inchers were put through it both steel and lead and ive never had a problem except when i was 13 and jsut got it the big magnums hurt...i upgraded to a 870 express mag turkey gun just for turkeys though...the mossy has a 28 inch barrel and it could double as a boat anchor if needed...the 870 was much lighter and i dont sit long in the turkey woods...if one bird isnt coming im finding another...usually walk about 3-4 miles a day turkey hunting...the heavy gun killed me when i was young..now im tunring 16 and still hate the weight but not the 870 is my best friend...21 inch barrel...weighs about nothing..and patterns 4 times better then the 500...and the 500 put 8 pellets in the head and neck at 30 yards...i couldnt count what the 870 did to a target at 25yds...i dont have any expierience with the 1300s...o ya...the 835 weighs more than the 500 does by a bit i believe...just something to think about..if weight doesnt matter i know i love my 500..still have it now and still use it for small game and birds...

RE: Whats your turkey gun?
I've shot an Ithica '37 for WAAAAY too long, I guess. I just can't get used to the safety being in the FRONT of the trigger guard on the 1300. The little things make a BIG difference.

RE: Whats your turkey gun?
I shoot a Mossberg 835 and like it a lot. With the 24" barrel instead a 28" it isn't very heavy. I walked 2-3 miles a day with it, no problem. It shoots 3 in the kill at 35 yards with everything that came out of the box when we bought it, plus some 3" #5's. I personally like the gun very much. I dunno about the winchester haven't had any experience with it. My cuz has a Remington 870 express that shoots a soft ball pattern at 25 yards with regular skeet shot. Take your pick.

RE: Whats your turkey gun?
Here's a pic of my Winchester 1300. As you can imagine, I like this gun a bunch. I've had an 870 many years ago, and while being a good gun, I just prefer the 1300.

RE: Whats your turkey gun?
Remington 11-87 STS super mag w/ 23" barrel. Litght weight, very little recoil with the semi even with hevi-shot 3 1/2 inchers.

RE: Whats your turkey gun?
Rem 870 express mag. Camo'd it myself. Very tight patterns at 40 yds with super full choke. Just upgraded it with Tru-Glo magnum gobble dot sights.

RE: Whats your turkey gun?
From the 2 choices you have-I'd take the 1300.The Winchester has a much slicker action and seemed to handle better for me than the 835.I had both and gave them to my nephews, but really miss the 1300.My current turkey gun is a Benelli Nova pump,24"bbl,RT camo with a BSA red-dot scope on a B-Square saddle mount. It's chambered for 3.5" shells but really likes Win.HV 3" #5's.It also has a Remington neoprene sling on it.

RE: Whats your turkey gun?
Every Turkey, spring or fall, has been with a Winchester 1300, 22" barrell....I did have to buy a Hastings choke tube for it, because I didn't like the extra full that came with the gun....I tried several different loads and several different brands, but until I put a new choke in it, I was not satisfied......I would like to offer this advice, Don't get caught up in the 3.5" hangup....sure they get you a few more yards, but for me the hunt is less than 35 yards....if he don't come within 35, he wins....I'll try him again next week.

RE: Whats your turkey gun?
There's no "right answer"...
I tried several guns before settling on one that worked best for me (for the $$) Win 1300. As other 1300 shooters mentioned in a post last year(?), many were dissatisfied with the Win factory x-full choke (although I did kill my first gobbler with mine). There are many excellent aftermarket chokes out there, and picking one is a whole nother thread. I got a comp-n-choke XX Full, and it patterns great. Simply, the best turkey gun is the one you can use the most effectively to harvest turkeys because ultimately you're pulling the trigger. |

RE: Whats your turkey gun?
I use a 870 wingmaster most of the time . I bought the Benelli Nova to hunt turkeys and waterfowl but it doesn't feel quite right to me . Did you ever get a gun that shoots okay but your not comfortable with, thats the way the Benelli feels to me .

RE: Whats your turkey gun?
I'll be taking my Browning BPS 12 with me in April to turkey hunt for the first time. I grew up shooting my dad's 870, but after going over all the pump action shotguns, I found the BPS to be the best for me. It's a very smooth shooting, quality shotgun.
