hunting feild birds or in the woods.
What do you guys find to be the most challenging? Hunting turkeys from edge of the woods in a feild or in small clear openings in the woods. Here easterns are more keen when they are in open feilds, last spring a tom was spooked when i was trying to get in closer by setting up close to a fench line. He was in full strut about 200 yards away then he must of caught me and he wen't left with his hens to a adjacent feild.

I agree... if you break that horizon line and they see it, more times than not they don't ask questions - they just get gone. I prefer some sort of shrubbery around me.

Raven A turkey hunter should be able to set up in both places and have strategies to work the birds. I do find that Field birds are a little tougher to take. Sometimes moving to different setups make a difference, thing is you take the chance of being caught on the move....BT

Feild birds are tough ,but if you can stay with them long enough there patternable!Open woods present a great challenge for me!There's nothing worse than wishing you were somewhere else when ole gobblers got you pinned down and not able to move because of the wide open terrain.Being able to set-up without being seen is where many hunts go sour!

They both drive me nuts at times. But the field birds are tougher.

I've only hunted them in the woods but would have to agree that field birds would be harder due to their extended vision. Sometimes I see hunting turkeys in the woods way too easy because of how forgiving it can be. Probably comes from reading the stories of hard hunts to get those field toms to come in close enough.

I like the field hunting better myself. Just like to watch the birds for a longer time. Got to get to the fields well before daylight to have the best chance at taking the bird.Scouting where the bird enters the field in the morning is a must! It can be rather frustrating when you watch a bird and give him your best calling routine, and he won't come in. Hunting Merriams in most places you don't have much but fields to set up in. Wood lots are usually to small to set up in with out spooking the bird of the roost.
