RE: What call do you perfer to use?
Here in WA, I guess it depends on which subspecies you are chasin'. I think a slate (and little of it) works well for the easterns here on the west side of the state - they don't tend to be very vocal and you can get a great purr off a slate. But the merriams in the east, the just LOVE, and I mean LOVE a box call. Strange thing is, I don't think the pitch matters much to them. I don't know why, but that box call really gets em' time and time again. Don't know much about the rio's in the central part of the state. I see em' deer hunting in the fall, but haven't hunted them at all (not ruling anything out in the future - just haven't got around to it yet ) I keep meaning to bring some calls when I'm chasin' the deer, just to see what'll stir em' up, but somehow, I forget every year until I pull into camp.

RE: What call do you perfer to use?
i bring a few varities in my vest each spring and experiment with what the birds will like to hear. I find having that variety is essential if your hunting a certian area for some time. Every bird has their own "sweet tune" he will respond back to and just having different calls will greatly put the ball in your court and greater your chances at harvesting a bird.
But remebering to not overdo it in calling is another key.....trial and error has taught me lol "The Bigger They Are,The Harder They call" |
RE: What call do you perfer to use?
i like to use a friction call...right now i only have 2...a cody glass call that still needs broken in and the right stricker which im working on the right wood for it now...and a knight and hale ol yeller with a frictionite surface...that thing sounds sweet with most strickers..even some of the first ones i made..i used it to call in the first turkeys i ever called in my self and when me and dad call together they always come my way first! i have a box call made by putts and it sounds pretty good...i dont like how using it except to locate birds that arent pressured at all because once in a while it throws out a squeek and i dont want to loose a bird over it...i think if i make the perfect strikers for my frictions i will have some sweet sounding calls...speaking of that im going to put the deer gear away and bust out the turkey vest and start practicing for srping in about 5 months! i cant wait!

RE: What call do you perfer to use?
Hey mauser good to see you bud long time no see. Yeah finding a striker that will sound good is important. BT is making me one out of apple wood so i can't wait to give her a try on my sla-tek.
Them acrylic strikers i find don't grip into the surface very well that come with a few on the market. "The Bigger They Are,The Harder They call" |
RE: What call do you perfer to use?
My money call is no doubt a mouth call!Different tones, raspy, clear, change cadence, soft, agrresive, whatever gobbler wants you can give it to him on a mouthcall with I might add alot of practice!Give me H.S's SplitV3,Double cutt3,and thier tonetrough raspy old hen and I'm a happy confident turkeyhunter!!

RE: What call do you perfer to use?
Wow BT you're really on aposting tear!
My favorite call is without a doubt a sweet, custom friction call. I prefer slate, but I also use glass. By carrying 2 calls and 4-5 different strikers I can sound like a whole harem of hot hens ready for tending! Here in PA, we hunt alot of public ground and needless to say there are some idiot roaming the same woods as us. Without going into to detail lets just say the birds hear alot of calling before and during open season. I like to use a mouth call as much as anyone, but I also like to use an off-beat call, like a tube call. PBB Pick a hair.....or a caruncle!! |
RE: What call do you perfer to use?
I got good responses from a Quaker Boy mouth call last season, but it was also the first season I used any mouth call. (three within sight, but only one in range) The season before that it was a custom crystal that lured two within sight; my buddy got one. Not as much experience behind my answer as some of the guys here, but it's just my $.02

RE: What call do you perfer to use?
I agree with Raven, you have to give them what they want to hear.I prefer using friction calls but I am willing to try anything that works.

RE: What call do you perfer to use?
I would have to go with the mouth call. I have this one call that i do and i can only do it with the mouth call.
It gets them every time!!!!!! |
RE: What call do you perfer to use?
raven..good to see you too i havent been aroudn the turkey forum lately...glad to hear apple works...i have 2 apple logs drying in the rafters of my gramas shed!! i can probally pull 4 strickers out of them i cant remember how bug they were....i am pulling them down and spliting them soon and throwing them back up to dry better..i didnt have time the day i cut them and weahter got cold and wet/snowy after that..it warmed a bit and i can go outside and not freeze...i agree the acrylic strikers do slide alot and harder to use consistantly...my dad uses one on a glass call!! i dont know how he does it but it sounds pretty decint..really nice low pitched yelps and nice purrs..i tried using the call and striker and it sounds like crap for me...i guess because thats all he uses and wont use anything else he learned it well...i cant wait to make some apple strickers! i was just experimenting with it i didnt even know if it would work..glad to hear someone else uses it...its so hard without a lathe!!!!!

RE: What call do you perfer to use?
Mauser,
I find soft woods to work great on a friction call. Must be the composition of the wood that it allows it to grip into the surface and create a nice pitch sound to the gobblers. I guess if you stick to one striker you will get the hang of it like your dad has done with that striker you mentioned. in my opinion i dunno if this is right i tend to belive that soft wood strikers give more volume and clairty to the calls. Hardwood strikers i find let you get more bite out of the sounds like a fighting purr and cackles but both woods will produce different sounds on how you hold the striker and what kind of friction call you use. "The Bigger They Are,The Harder They call" |
RE: What call do you perfer to use?
BT, like you, I prefer a mouth call, but I also use friction calls that I also enjoy using just as much. Slate, Glass, Aluminum, and Sla-Tek type call surfaces work well. When first starting the game I use one of these friction calls, then as the bird works in closer, I then switch to a mouth call which allows both hands to be on your gun and at the very same time allows you to call while your face is up against the stock. The mouth call is by far the most deadly turkey call on the market today bar none, because of these reasons listed here. While I do carry a box call with me, it's these other calls that see most of the duty!!

RE: What call do you perfer to use?
Well BT, as you well know, I have a big problem using mouth calls, I gag to easy..so i've had all my luck with box calls, slate's & plunger calls....what can I say, get them in close enough to see my decoys & they all came a running...take care my friend & i'll talk to you later....Brampton Mike

RE: What call do you perfer to use?
My favorite call is a mouth call, but I like to use a variety of friction calls too.
|
RE: What call do you perfer to use?
I'm more of a box and slate caller. I use a blind so movement is not an issue and the louder box call really reaches out and brings them in.
|
RE: What call do you perfer to use?
I found out over the years that turkey hunters and guitar players have the same mentality...THEY WON'T TELL YOU OR SHOW YOU NOTHING!!!.....I love this place.....LOL....I like to use a variety of mouth calls and a slate call.

I like them with Long Sharp Spurs.... |
RE: What call do you perfer to use?
Use a mouth call most of the time. If it is real windy I will try a box or a glass call. I just feel more confident using a mouth call. Less movement to spook a silent gobbler that might sneek in.
|
RE: What call do you perfer to use?
I use a slate/friction type 95% of the time. My all time favorite is a H.S. Strut double glass that I took my first gobbler with along with one of my buddies first gobblers.
