How close is too close ?

For a roosted bird. I like to be in where I can see them maybe around 100 yards. This way if he is a silent bird I can see what kind of responds I get from him.How about you...BT

Yeah... about 100 yards is what I go for as well. Be an aweful way to start the day by spooking them off the roost before the sun comes up. Besides - the best part of turkey hunting is callin' them in!

I agree fellas around the 100 yard mark if I can get that close.I do like to be able to be close enough to see which way the bird pitch's out off the roost.By doing so it can give you the opportunity to move your gun and set-up looking in that general direction instead of being surprised having him slip in your backdoor!<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Igotta agree,About 100 yds.How many of you guys remember back before turkey huntin became so popular and before there were so many hens,If you heard a bird gobble 300 yds away or more,You just set up where you were and started callin. It was nothin to hear that boy gobble 200 times or better. They could cover that ground in a very short time if they had a mind to.

Depends on the time of year and how green the woods are, but when possible I like to get to 100 yards.

100 yards seems right but I don't try to see them at all on the roost but maybe that is just the conditions I'm hunting in. Where I hunt I am often getting multiple toms gobbling so I often try to position myself between them. I've had some mornings where I'm choosing a spot within 3-4 toms gobbling off their roost. I just go by hearing and instinct and normally my calling brings them in.

Depends...early season, 50-100 yards.

Late season, when they've heard anything, I'll get to within 25 yards and try to coerce them into my lap at flydown. Callin' 'em is great, but late in the season walking under them to me is just as gratifying.

Haven't spooked one off the roost in a long, long time. Just get there well before light...scouting pays off bigtime.

Kind of depends on which sub-speices your hunting. With the easterns,I try to get with in a 100 yards or so,but hunting merriams in the plains of South Dakota, a lot of times you may have to stay back 200 yards or better because the cover is to thin to allow you to get any closer with out bumping the bird off the roost!

I've only hunted Easterns thus far but like the 100 yard mark also. I will try to get closer if I can if I have to, but sometimes I'm also stuck out further.
