Longest shot ever?? Whats ur's??
 

My buddy and I were hunting this morning...... long story short, a jake came into the field that we had been set up on for a couple hrs. My buddy said, "its just a jake, want me see what my gun has?" Usually I would say no in fear of spooking birds in the surrounding area.... but its the last day we could hunt there. So he ended up shooting, and much to my surprise he dropped the bird! This may not seem like a big deal, but we paced it off and he shot 77yrds. Yes, 77yrds!! He shoots a Mossberg 535 with 3 1/2in. magnums. This got me thinking..... whats your longest shot on a turkey that you ended up killing??
-Personally, mine is 52 yrds. and he was running wide open accrossed a field. I am quite proud of that shot.

Most on here are turkey hunters and not turkey shooters. Many on here spend many hours practicing with box calls and mouth calls to bring the tom inas close as possible, 20-30yds. When a turkey hunter can do this, he can take the bird with 20ga and 2-3/4 ammo.:)

I am also a ver succesful turkey HUNTER not SHOOTER! There isusually that one special occation in evryones hunting career when not everything goes right and thye have to reach out and touch the bird. I'm not recommending shooting long range at birds (as I dont) I was just curious as to how far some of you have been able to take a bird. That wouldnt come in or under some other circumstance.

Your buddy is not very smart. His statement of "just a jake" disturbs me. Even a jake is a wonderful bird and deserves respect. Shooting at "just a jake" to see if my gun can do it at that distance is not very smart. Sure that was a heck of a "lucky" shot, but he should have never taken it.He was very lucky he didn't wound the bird. Oh, I forgot, it's okay to take a chance on wounding him, after all, he is"just a jake".I bet he didn't pattern his gun at 77 yards. I'm guessing if ithad been a longbeard he wouldn't have taken that risk. It shouldn't matter though. I've killed a couple at 50 yards, but I know for a fact my gun and load is fully capable of killing one cleanly at that distance. I'm not saying you and your buddy are unethical hunters, but this was an unethical decision on your buddy's part. Sorry for theserman. Just my opinion.

I killed a bird in Texas at 56 yards. I knew it was around 50 yards or so, and was confident my gun could do it. It was my first Rio, and I was 19 years old. My gun can acctually get it done reliably, everytime out to 60.

But, I turkey hunt because I like to hunt. If I just wanted to kill birds I could sit on the edge of a field with a .17 and shoot crows in the beans. I limit myself to 40 yards personally.

The real ? here is what is everyones CLOSEST SHOT ever? The close ones are harder than the far ones. I killed a bird at 12 yards three years ago, and the other three birds I have tried inside 15 yards....missed all three of 'em!

I have patterend my gun and I am confident out to 50 yards with it. The longest distance I have ever shot a turkey was about 40 yards away.

I shot my first bird at 50 yds with my 870 and 3" whinchester supremes and I shot this years bird at 40 yards. Three years ago i shot at a jake at 60 yards, I knocked him down then he flew away. I guess he was a little too far for my gun.

My farthest shot that killed the bird is probably just over 30 yards. This season I took a shot at a nice gobbler at around 50 yardsand missed it, so I will probably stickonly shooting at distances under 35-40 yards tops.

56 yards. I was on a hill and he was below me and I really thought he was 40yards max. I shot he droppedI stood up went down to him, and looked where I was sitting and thought wow that was way too far! Wont do it again either. I was 17 at the time (not experienced enough at judging distances)

mine was 31 yds...iwill shoot up to 40 yds. because i know my gun/load combois very capable,i could probably getaway with 55 yds. but theres no way i would even think about it....one of the best things about turkey hunting is getting them as close as they can be,theeeeeeeeen shooting them...

15 yards or so. I'm awful at judging distances and don't like to risk it. I had the biggest bird I've ever seen at about 30-35 yards on Monday and I didn't take the shot. Maybe it was farther, maybe it was closer. I just didn't feel confident.

i never liek to shoot any where over 45 yards normally, but with my 11-87 SPS Supermag shooting Hevi-13 #6 3 1/2" and a UnderTaker choke i took a bird at 61 yards. he was walkign the other way after hanging up i i wanted him bad so i but the fiber optics just over his head and he went down, not hard like a 10 yard shot but he went down and flopped a bit.i never imagined i wouldget him at thatdistance but luck was most defintly a part of it. my pattern at 50 yardsis about 30 pellets in a 12 inch circle. i figure he wasnt hit with many but it really only takes one in the right spot. i have dropped geese at 55 yards but that is a little different. a 10 gauge would prolly do the same but the new 12ga. 3 1/2" loads out there will equal a 10 ga. most days. for recoil and power.

I only hunt with bow. So farthest was at about 25 yrds. THere was no breeze so it was a confident shot. Any farther and I would watch the bird and enjoy if I could not get him closer or take picks of him.

the closest shot i have ever taken was abotu 10 feet. one afternoon last fall i was hunting and fell asleep. when i woke up there were three hens and a jake about 10 yards out. i clucked three or four times and one hen came in close. i let her keep coming and when she turned i picked up the gun. she perked up and started toward me again. i finally shot and she laid right there. her head was nearly off but i got my tasty feed that night. i would rather shoot at a middle of the road range liek 25 yards. that way the pattern opens up but not too much. i have seen more birds missed by hunters when using turkey chokes at really close ranges than missing far away. one thing i never recomend is using steel shot if possible. as on waterfowl, feathers are tight together and steel will bounce off at langer ranges if you dont get a clean head/neck shot. thats why i dont shoot ducks off the water. they are tucked up and steel wont got through good. it will kill, trust me, but its not my first choice. That story disturbs me. I don't care if it was a Jake or a 30 lb gobbler......if you don't know if your gun is capable of making a humane kill, then don't take the shot. I don't care if it is a 3 1/2", anyone with common sense still wouldn't take the shot. Wisen up!!!!!!

My furthest was 52 yards. After patterning my gun, I knew it was capable.

This disturbs me even more. You were right next to him dip $hit.......so I can't blame you for taking the shot, but I can blame you for encouraging him, or not trying to talk him out of it. Think about it buddy.....would you take that shot? If no, then why didn't you try to stop the person your sitting next to. If yes, then you have issues like your buddy. Pretty cut & dry!!!!

I reread your post like you recommended, and you made even a bigger a$$ of yourself. You said....

Fear of spooking the birds...WTF....WTF I say. Spooking the birds should be one of the last things you should be worried about. The first thing should be wounding a bird or a braindead reason. The second thing should be trying to call the bird into a humane range. Now what.....Perhaps you post would have sounded better if you said:

Usually I would say no in fear of wounding a bird and not recovering it, but I couldn't convince him otherwise.

I've patterned my gun out to 50 yards and know that I'm at the maximum range there for the pattern I'm getting. I killed my last longbeard at 42 yards with this gun and he never even flopped. The only time I attempted a shot longer than my tested maximum range was when I mis-estimated the range because of what I later found out was a detached retina in my shooting eye. I have passed on quite a few nice birds over the years because they were just out of range. It's stupid to take pot shots at a bird when you don't know that you can humanely kill them at that distance. Sure, a stray pellet my just randomly hit the brain and you get the bird, but you more likely risk wounding the bird and never having another chance to kill it cleanly.

wow... thats strange, a detached retina. I hope everything is better and your out hunting again. (judging distances better) :)Yeah... I also pattern my gun for 50 yrds.... at 65 I still get the recommended 5 BB's in the neck of the turkey target, but dont like to shoot that far if I can help it.

I dont like to shoot that far RebelHog. I'm just saying that I pattern it out for 50 yrds. I believe most hunters do aswell. And yes I do call them in close. I am a two time upstate NY turkey calling champion aswell. So must be I'm doing something right.

For anyone to even comtemplate testing the limits of their weapon with sights on a live animal is irresponsible and senseless. That is done at the range in the off season. Next time, tell your buddy to hit the range in the off season if he is curious as to the maximum distance of his weapon.

That's what he started the thread with. That's not a Turkey hunting asking, that's a hot dog Turkey Shooter asking.

To come on here and ask a question like that when there are to many on here who spend many hours learning on how to Call and take a Turkey at close range is humiliating to those who have pride in True Turkey Hunting.

I pattern my gun out to 50 yards. I know I CAN kill a bird every shot at 50, so I set that as my max, although I have passed on some at that distance, I like to get them 35 or closer, thats what I call a chip shot for my gun. Anyhow, I have killed one at 59 yards, I thought he was like 50 or I wouldn't have shot. But that Hevishot rolled him upgood at 59. But 77 yards!? I believe you he did itbut I think it was stupid.

My longest shot was this season. I accidentally walked right up to a roosted bird (actually, he was about 50 yards away). I sat down immediately when I hear him gobble so close. I soon as I sat down I noticed a large creek between me and him. The creek was roughly 45 yards away. Well once he flew down, he would not cross that creek. He would just walk to the edge and look right at me and gobble. So after about an hour of this, I had to make the decision whether or not to try and shoot. I have patterned my gun out to 50 yards before and get good enough results, but I was till uncertain. I usually don't take long shots, if anything, I'm too conservative with my shots. Well anyways, I ended taking the shot and missing and ruining my hunt and my season with it. That was the only bird I seen or heard all season and I never heard him after I shot at him. Needless to say, I will no longer attempt any shots farther than 40 yards.

Longest shot about 25 yards.

Closest shot....6 yards! That shot includes a very good story for it being that close.

I use a Ithaca 87 3in. mag. My closest is right off the end of the gun barrell,my longest was about 50 yards
