Anyone make a jake tail fan to use while hunting?


I want to make a jake tail fan out of real turkey feathers to us in my decoys. I’d like it to accordion close for carrying and open for use in the field.



I have a cabelas version of a jake fan but had several birds stop short and get nervous when they saw it. I wanted to upgrade to real feathers.


I already have two tails to work with from this season and I am working on a third bird now.


Has anyone done this? Any ideas??

I've used one for a while(2years) Dry the fan, drill a small hole vertically, into the dried meat at the base of the fan. Insert a 10 inch section of a clothes hanger/welding rod and it's complete. Dry the fan fully open. Don't know how to "accordion" one, since the "meat" is dry and non flexable.

I suppose you could re-asemble the individual feathers like a chinese fan. Sounds like a lot of work.

I made several and used a wood bracket painted flat black to hold the fan. I find really no trouble carry this.

that way I can change from a mature to a Jake fan rather quickly.

I use a clipboard with most of the board broken off. Squeeze it loose, spread the fan and then reclamp. I then use a binder clip,( big paper clip thingy), to attach the clipboard clamp and fan to the deke. I sprayed the clips brown to blend better. I'll take some pics and post them in a bit.

BTW, that fan looked a lot better on its first few hunts! It got hammered in my vest last week.
