"soft" mouth calls
 

As a relatively new caller.....I've practiced a ton with my mouth calls.

As a bowhunter.....the need to be able to use a mouth call when they're in close is a must. What mouth call is good for soft calling.....when they're in close range? Mine seem to be good for louder applications.....but tougher to use for soft calling.

It takes practice, but try to muffle the sound by closing your mouth/lips more. You will notice when you mouth is open, the sound is louder. Try creating you calls the same as usual, but keeping your mouth closed.

This is mainly the way I control the loudness of my purrs when bowhunting turkeys.

Place the call back in your mouth as far as you possibly can and it will take less air force to create sound..

I would use a single reed and only have your mouth partially open,It takes some pratctice.
I will walk around the house and practice or if it drives the wife crazy sit out on the back porch.
You can also hold a piece of cardboard (2'x2') about ten to twelve inches from your face this will give you a idea as to how loud it actually sound's.

Soft calling is my bread and butter when a gobbler gets close, but only if he is behind a tree. I don't call to turkeys when they can clearly see me. That is the best way to get busted I know, other than moving.

As to how, I don't know - just use less air to create less volume. Hold your diaphram tight and you can control the air easier. I only use 3 or 4 reed, cut-reed raspy calls and it is really easy to soft call on them. It would be nearly impossible for me to do it on a single reed call because the frequency is too high and it takes too much air to get that single tight reed to vibrate. With the cut-reed calls the top reed is loose and can vibrate to create the soft sound with very little air.

I agree with mouth caller.
Use the same calls you are comfortable with.3 reeds with cuts are easier to be soft on. IMO. Just get used to calling with less air and maybe less tongue pressure. It will take some time but you will figure it out. Remember that all air across the reeds comes from the diaphragm not the mouth.

Think of it as heavy breathing for the loud stuff and normal for the soft. lol

good advice everyone. to answer your ? i use a Knight and Hale Single Reed, it's the best "soft" call i have. Good Luck in your search.
