I'm being stood up.

My brother in law who is my best friend and hunting buddy just backed out of our trip that starts on Tuesday. He tells me that hes talked to the ranch manager and the birds just aren't cooperating. He doesn't want to spend the money on a chance of getting skunked. The property manager told him he saw flocks of 30-40 birds just 2-3 weeks ago but just a few hens for the past two weeks.
Not many people have hunted the place so I'm sure the toms haven't all been killed. We have had some weird weather with temperature variations from the 30s to the 80s over the past couple of weeks. I think it just threw the birds off and they will be cranking up again soon.
I'm still going to go. I'm going to spend the day Tuesday on public land in the morning and then make the drive to the ranch and try to roost some birds to hunt Wednesday morning. If I find birds on the public land like I did opening weekend, (doubtful), I may just stay there on the National Grasslands. The main reason I want to hunt the private land is I think I'll have much better odds of bagging a bow bird.
I'm disappointed but I'm still going and I'll get over it. BTW, hes going to Ks and Mo for hunts soon. I'm not. He said he can't afford to go with me. Go figure!

I'm an electrician and I hunt in Texas. I go by txjourneyman because of my trade and because my user name used to be txrookie. I started bowhunting 2 years ago. Since then I have killed 4 deer and several hogs. I feel like I've gone from a rookie to a journeyman in my hunting career as well as my employment. I have a long way to go before I'm a master!

I thought you might be a lineman. I'm in the power lineman trade for 26 years. I wish you good hunting. We have had strange weather also and did slow up the turkey season some. We 80 afew days and a foot of snow the next. It is finally gone here.

I do some medium voltage work at the university where I'm employed. we own a bunch of S&C switches and XFMRS and I occasionally have to get the ground sets out and swap a fuse or some such. If anything major happens we call out a company called Shermco.

Journeyman,

Assuming that this hunt you are talking about is in TX? Is it for Eastern's? Do you mind saying where you are going? You can PM me if you want. We've already talked earlier in the season about TX hunting. The place that I ended up going was a bust. We hunted for three days, saw only 1 turkey/turkey track/turkey dropping the entire time. We did get one bird but I'm not sure where he came from! I'm just curious to know if you are going over the same direction that I went.

Send me a note!

hootnscoot...where in Texas did you go? I have been seeing a decent amount of birds where I am hunting (around Abilene). I have read that the population is down in Texas due to droughts the last year.
