Ever been spurred?

A buddy of mine called me a little while ago to tell me about the bird he got this morning. He got a nice tom, 19 lbs, 8.5" beard and 1" spurs. He told me that when the bird was flopping on the ground he ran over to get it and wring its neck. Well, he picked it up in his right hand and somehow his left hand got impaled on a spur. He told me if felt a lot like getting stuck with a mesquite thorn. For those of you not blessed with mesquites let me assure you the thorns suck! Dennis told me his hand hurts like heck and bled profusly for a while. He also said it was worth it. I think I will continue stepping on them!
Has anyone else out there been spurred?

Not to the extent your friend did, but Ive been poked a few times. Many a glove has been demolished from those meathooks they have.

Done it one time, and learned my lesson.I ran up to a bird I had shot, and grabbed one leg.I had on a pair of those thin mesh gloves.Well he went to spinning in a circle and tightened up my glove so tight I couldn't pull it off.He actually ended up breaking the spur off his leg and into my hand. Now I push both hands down on their wings, and then grab both legs.:D

Wait until their nerves are done with spasm's and kick it a few times to make sure their done before grabbing them and you won't have to worry about getting spurred.

Oh no, I'll get ahold of them ASAP. I have seen a bird get done with his spasms and get up and run off. It wasn't my bird but it was still pretty disappointing. The guy said he thought he hit it hard and thought it would be OK to just let it die. No, I'll keep running to the bird and stepping on his head.

Years ago, I got spurred bad myself!! Shot a dandy bird I was playing cat and mouse with since 5:30am, and at 9:15am I finally pulled the trigger, which nocked him flat at the shot. I ran up to him and quickly picked him up trying to guess his weight, when his nerves suddenly kicked in, and he started flapping his wings wildly!!! This caused me to loose my grip and allow him to plant the right spur deep into the web of my right hand. It went clean through my glove and sank in about 1/2"!!!! OUCH!!!
Lesson learned on that bird!!

OUCH! Sounds painful![:o]Last turkey I ever got which was 3 years ago...20 lb. gobbler with 3/4" and 1 1/4" spurs and 8.5" beard...the 1 1/4" spur was so sharp and pointed, I can see how that could spur you in the hand. I let mine just flop around though until they are done.
