is the heavy shot for waterfowl the same as the heavy shot that is in turkey loads?

From what I can tell, yes. The only real difference is the volocity. So I guess that youre load will get to the turkey just a little faster than most turkey loads. If that is what you are going to use I would say your safe, and heck it might be better.

Actually, when comparing the Hevi-shot waterfowl loads to the turkey loads, the waterfowl usually have a little less ounces(1 5/8 ) of shot and velocity is 1300 fps. The turkey loads have 1 7/8 ounces of shot and are 1250 fps. This is for the 10 ga. shells I shoot. Both will kill either game equally but I like the turkey loads for both because of the pellet count.
You can't go wrong with either one but pattern each if cost isn't a factor.
I love the old Hevi-shot for ducks and turkeys.

Both roadkill and antleraddict are correct.

The shot itself is the same. the animal on the package changes, but thats about it. The main difference is that the turkey loads do have heavier payloads (more shot) and in turn have lower velocity. However, there have been plenty of turkey's killed with waterfowl loads and vice versa around our household. I find that duck loads are cheaper in the spring and turkey loads go on sale in the fall. :D

thanks guys. i just have two boxes of #4's leftover from this past duck season and was wanting to use them instead of buying some turkey loads. sounds as if i can use them.

Only potential problem I see with that is that you will have a fairly small pellet count using #4s in a 1 5/8 ounce load. I suggest patterning one at 40 yards to see if you have holes in the pattern. Remember also that the Hevi Shot isn't uniform in size. Someone on the NWTF board disected a Nitro 4X5X7 and found every shot size from size T to #9 in that thing.

I much prefer #6s with Hevi Shot simply because of the higher pellet count.

Excellent point. You will notice when you pattern that the shot is most certainly not all the same size. How they determine what is #6 Hevi and what is #4 Hevi when its all mixed up is beyond me. Also, hevi shot is not round, but more of an egg shape or rough pearl shape. This probably effects the way it patterns. I have found that it is very very picky about chokes and guns it likes to shoot well out of. Hevi-13 isn't quite as choosy, and it seems like Win Elite extended range shoots great out of almost everything I have put it through.

i patterned my gun today and with #4 waterfowl with 1 3/4 ounce shot i had 18 pellets inside the kill zone at forty yards.

killed a big tom today with my waterfowl loads. shot him at 49 steps and he didn't take another step, just went to flappin.
