anybody hunt turkey from a blind
has anybody hunted turkey from a blind? How did you do?

RE: anybody hunt turkey from a blind
For some reason turkeys just seem oblivious to blinds. You can set one in the middle of a field and they will walk right by it. I hunted out of a blind last year and my step dad killed his first turkey. It was the first time he had ever been turkey hunting. I got a lot of it on film. I will definitely be using a blind this year because I am chasing those gobblers with a bow this spring.

Here ya go. This is out in the wide open in a feild.
Had hens pecking around the blind at less than 10 yds a few times. ![]() |

We use blinds all the time, because we are using archery tackle! I like the fact that you can sit side by side, be semi-comfortable on a small chair, and visit quietly with your partner, also if it's raining you're nice and dry, and filming hunts is easy to do! Turkeys just aren't bothered by blinds!

RE: anybody hunt turkey from a blind
I concur. If you are interested in buying a blind the one thing to beware of is to not get a blind that is too small. My first blind was so small I couldnt get turned around to the right to shoot a bird.

I turkey hunt out of my Double Bull T5 ground blind most of the time and those birds will walk right up to it.
Heres a picture from last spring of my set up. |

Blinds are great in so many differnt reasons; they protect you from the elements, conceal some of your movement/sound and they also huge confidence boosters! If you're planning on buying a blind, my favorite maker is Double Bull. Here's a link: http://www.doublebullarchery.com/

RE: anybody hunt turkey from a blind
I bought a dog house blind and really like it. It was cheaper for me to get a blind than to buy the camo clothing to get me started turkey hunting.
Hope to get a Double Bull in the near future. |
RE: anybody hunt turkey from a blind
Ont,That's an awesome picture bud.Myself,I don't like bein confined in one.But if you have a young hunter who can't sit still they work great. As was said above turkey don't pay any attention to a blind.

I have hunted from blinds and I really like hunting from them. You can move more and film easier. Im sure opening morning my butt will be setting in one.

RE: anybody hunt turkey from a blind
Turkey hunting from my Double Bulls blind has already become tradition for me. It has been by FAR my most effective method of hunting the birds. In fact, these quality pop up blinds have also enabled me to take along several other folks to introduce to the sport. I know both of my Double bulls blinds (Matrix and the T5) have totally changed my game and even made bowhunting the birds my favorite thing to hunt! Man, there is just something to be said about consistently getting birds 10 yards away!

Thanks Jalva. The cameraman is someone we both know ;);)
I agree with not using one most of the time. I have said before I think you learn more being mobile and getting in different set ups. Blinds will lock you down in one spot. They are great for rain, young hunters joining you and wives :)and also when you have a second guy with a camera. Also I guess sometimes the set up requires you to be in one spot so they can be good for that. Just another tool in the arsenal! |

RE: anybody hunt turkey from a blind
I don't use blinds because I like to move. The fun of turkey hunting for me is matching wits with a gobblng bird, "playing the game" as I call it. The most memorable birds I've taken have been the type that I have chased across hills, ditches, and "hollers", setting up in different places and finally getting him to gun range.
I am making a concession this year because my #1 goal is to help get my 10-year old son his first gobbler. I plan to construct several "blinds" around our lease using natural material (cane, logs, etc). These will be in field edges and likely calling spots near roosting areas. Tip: take a pair of clippers with you so you can quickly snip fresh green branches to stick in the ground around you. Many times this is just as good as a blind if you have a large tree behind your back. |
RE: anybody hunt turkey from a blind
Blinds such as the Dog House Blind work excelent. If youre hunting over an open field setup along the edge just inside the woods maybe 5-10 yards on the opposite side from where you expect the birds to come out of. Setting up too close may ruin your chances on the big boss tom. Camo your blind even more with twigs branches and what everelse isnatural around you.

RE: anybody hunt turkey from a blind
Double Bull period! I started in 1996 bow hunting only for birds & used everything you can imagine. The only draw back to a blind is not moving from place to place. I now own two & that helps...
Comfy chair, food & drink, I need a heater someAM's hear in WI, PATIENCE! |
RE: anybody hunt turkey from a blind
Hunting turkeys from a blind is great way to hunt. Just make sure that the windows for your shooting lane is the only windows that you have open. If they look through your window and its black your good but if the back window is open and they see that light, bye bye turkey.

RE: anybody hunt turkey from a blind
So wheen you hunt from a blind, where do you set up, and what are some things that I need to know. I have read all of the posts on this thread, but was just wondering if there was some other things I need to know. Do you just set it up, and stay in one place all the time? Or do you move it around? Do I need to hunt field edges, or hunt the tiumber?

RE: anybody hunt turkey from a blind
Bigdaddy12t;
Setting up your blind depends on your situation, and depends on where your turkeys are going throughout the morning and day. If they are coming into fields set blind up on the edge and have your decoys set up in the field about 15 yards away. If you have to move after the turkeys just leave the blind behind and hunt by a tree or set up different the next day. Sometimes you need to be out in the field/woods to get the turkeys figured out, and then sometimes you can't. Knowing where your turkeys are roosting and where they are going after they fly down from the tree is going to help you out alot. |
RE: anybody hunt turkey from a blind
remember stealth too. Don't walk into a roost areaand start making a lot of noise setting up a blind at a feild edge. Also if you have to break a bunch of branches in the timber to get it into place it probably tells you sittng down against a tree is better. I think set up wise you're looking at 2 things: open areas, expected long sits in one place.
I guess I add weather to that. Regardless of where I might be going if it's raining it keeps me focused and out longer if I have my blind. I just make sure to be as stealthy as I can getting set up. There's a lot more to that with a big blind and a chair. |
RE: anybody hunt turkey from a blind
I've huntedout of a blind,I've hunted from the ground, even shot at 'em from a stand once(the key words are Shot At
).I kept hittin the top of the bow on the roof and I kinda enjoyed shootin AT the birds from the stand. But I'll say this,I hope to never go into the woods without my decoys!(changed my life) |
RE: anybody hunt turkey from a blind
I agree with everyone whos been saying that turkeys somehow arent bothered by blinds. I was deerhunting one year and 2 hens walked about 3 feet in front of me. Ive also heard of someone using one and a turkey walked inside. Good thing about them is you have basically 360 degrees shooting since they wont see you. Only hard part is unzipping the window/door without them seeing to put your gun out.
Heres a story on a tom i shot about 3 or 4 years ago using a blind..... I had no luck all day and was just starting to pack up when I heard footsteps coming closer and closer. So I sat back down and kept listening. It was 2 nice toms walking in. Nogobbles or anything. They got so close that I could see them through the blind. I unzipped a windown VVVEEERRRYYY slowly to notice one of the toms about 7 yards away. I knew that I had no chance of actually unzipping the window and grabbing my gun and aim and shoot, obviously the tom would have ran off. So I figured the only way possible was to barely put the barrel on part of the window and pull it down to make it unzip (the wrong way to unzip something) and then shoot. It worked. I pulled the hammer down, ripped the window down, aimed and shot....all within about 2second. Turkey went down 7 yards away. They work good, believe me. Also, you can keep things in it overnight....decoys, calls, food..etc. |
