What do readers think about Moss. 835 or 935 shotguns?
I need some feedback, my buddy is looking at buying a Mossberg 835 pump or 935 auto, and before he does, we would like some opinions. Dicks sporting goods has the 935 in advantage camo with 24" and 28" barrels (turkey/waterfowl combo) with red dot scope for 499.98 and the 835 (turkey/waterfowl combo) w/o red dot scope for 275.00. What do you guys think about these 2 set ups. Also Dick's has the 500 (T&Wcombo) except 22" barrel w/ xx-full turkey choke and 28" field barrel w/ red dot scope for 299.98.
We would appreciate your honest opinions on these particular guns (are they good or junk). What about the prices good or bad?

I have an 835 and absolutely love it. I've run hundreds of shells through it and haven't had a single issue with it.
I personally feel that it's well built and reliable. However, it does rattle a bit - but nothing horrible. It wouldn't sway me from buying another one.
However, with that being said...you're going to get a bunch of folks chiming in with their personal opinions (as is mine) regarding their preferences. I think for the money, it's a great gun. Others disagree, which they have 100% right to do.
I'd check out some online reviews from reputable websites if I were you (or have your friend do it) to get what some big name groups think.
If he opts not to pick up a Mossberg, have him take a look at the Remingtons. They are very nice guns as well, in my opinion.
As far a the 935 goes, I have no experience with this shotgun.
Just my $0.00000002 worth.

I too noticed that the 835 rattled a little bit. I also had a problem with the pump getting "sticky" half way through the cycle. I really enjoyed the gun, however, I sold it and got a Remington 870 SPS-T. I really enjoyed the gun, I just wanted a Remington instead. As far as a pump or automatic goes, I would go with a pump if you are using it for turkey hunting. How many shots are you going to take at a single turkey? If you are going to be using it for waterfowl as well...then it may be worth investing the extra $100 or so in the automatic.

I have an 835 and would never consider getting rid of it. I think those prices you quoted are fair. Like r33h said, if it's going to be a turkey only gun you'll probably only need one shot and the pump would work. But if you're looking at using it for ducks/geese also, then I'd probably get the auto. Let us know what your friend ends up getting. I'm thinking about the auto myself for waterfowl. I'd love to have a SBE II but have a hard time forking over $1500 for a shotgun if the 935 would do just as well.

I have an 835 set up for turkey, but would loose my shoulder shooting the 3.5", but luckily it patterned better with 3". Excellent gun, reliable, just a mule with 3.5" 3.5" is not important though!

strutnbuck if you put one of the simms recoil pads on it it hurts about as bad as 2 3/4'' last year i shot about 40 3.5s out of it in one patterning session and i still have my left arm. It kicked so bad without the pad I couldn't shoot it but 2 or3 times and my arm was about to fall off
