Help Something new to me!
 

After lots of reading and such Iwant to give turkey season a try this year.I know about as much as my 6yr old son about turkey so bear with me.Ive been reading,watching,listening to everything I can to learn.Now the only thing missing is I need to invest in calls.I will have time to practice our turkey season isnt till may so who can help?I understand the need for practice so who can recomend some starter calls for a newbie.Im looking for easy to use multipurpose calls(i know i will need several).I may even consider a mouthcall being Im a truck driver(LOTS OF TIME TO PRACTICE WHILE ON THE ROAD)its just so confussing with all the different manufacturers and materials available.I need the help of the turkey experts on this board to point me in the right direction please.thanx again.

NY, I would get me a push pin type, a pot style in slate and a box call to start out with as far as turkey calls go. Get a couple of locater calls as well an owl hooter and a crow call would be a good place to start. Get a real turkey sound CD and practice.Are you over the road or local? Are you Red Sox or Yankee fan?

I am in agreement but would change up a bit. Push pin, box, and mouth call. Try a crow call and use your hat as wing for flapping. You can use anything your are comfortable with. Primos, Quaker Boy, and MAD calls are all good but not the only choices out there.

Thanx for the help guys.ultimag Im local and I really dont follow baseball my wife is a yankee fan so that would make me a sox fan if I had to pick lol.

Well NY my best advice I can give ya is to shop around when you can between trips.
There isa product called MTA : Mouth Calls Made Easy it's a package deal where you get three mouth calls and a instrctional CD.
This will allow you to listen and practice as your driving down the road , push pin box calls are good too use can use those with one hand.
As for brand name prouducts go , Knight & Hale , Quaker Boy and Primos make pretty good game calls for turkey hunting.

i felt the same way a couple years ago. i got a couple mouth calls and practiced till they fell apart. get a few locators (owl, crow) and get a push pin. if you have any time left over to practice at home invest in a good pot style friction call in glass or slate. these are more expensive but once learned have the best quality sound IMO. i wouldnt get a bix unless you want it, it serves no purpose if you get a push pull except maybe on windy days. thats when i use my mouth calls tho.

never have tried it but it looks to be a good one for only $18. anyone tried this one out before?

I began with Knight and Hales turkey book/cassette. The book goes into great detail about when to use which call. While this isn't exactly 100% all the time (by the dates they listed) it sure will get you a turkey... Did me. I am sure other instructional calls are good too. Never used another brand though.

Ny, Keep it simple for your first season! a box call is a great starter call.
this time of year is perfect for playin with new calls, by the time may
gets here youmight have'um all soundin just rite! get to know your
area and birds in it. Remember this: call less..look and listen more!
