Very nice!
I made this tube call out of elk antler, with a Aspen lip stop, I call it a Colorado Special!

IMO, these sound better than the caps, but they are more expensive!
Good starter for certain!
Shoot straight!

Mallard, The opening of the tube that you place your laytex over can change the tone and volume of the call. The thickness of the laytex that you use will also make a change with the same issue. 3 mil is a good thickness but 4 mill may work better to get started.

The gap between the laytex and the mouth opening can be changed to change the way it works. A lot of hunters like a thin gap, but if you place a 1/4 in in the gap it sometimes is easyier to use.

ICALL2MUCH :
I understand your thoughts and maybe excitement of this thread had ideas come to mind if plugging was not intended. I'm sorry I was harsh, but the guys that have been here for years see the same pattern over and over again. When you become famous you never come back. You have signature that relates to Custom calls and pictures only add to" What I can do syndrome" Please don't take this all wrong as I just wanted to make you ware...

If I pull around on the latex, twist it or let it loose I can make the tone change drasticaly and It really helps.

RE: make your own call!

MS,

Don't worry about what the others say, if you can make a call and it works, great. I too make some scratch box calls for myself and friends, they're not pretty, not even sanded down, but they work. I call them, "The Closers", and only a few close friends have them.

I have been thinking about trying to sell a few, and may well do so, but if I decide not to, you can bet, it won't be because of someone that he or she thinks they know everything about turkey hunting.

Now my offer, these are scratch box calls, I recommend they only be used as closers. In other words, if a gobbler hangs up, use try my call. I have never even thought about about selling one, so, I want 10 people to try them this coming turkey season. Actually 11 folks because I sent JW two out of our friendship. They work for me, they are not pretty, I don't even try to sand out the marks from my sander, but they have worked for me as closers, in other words, when that gobbler hangs up, try this one then and only then.

Any takers, send me a pm, I'll make some for the first 10 people I hear from. I will only ask you to do a couple of things, follow my instructions and let me know how they worked. Yes, if I get a good response, I'm gonna try to sell a few, what the heck, if I can make a few dollars out of a hobby, what's wrong with that.

I'd take one if the offer is still in effect.

I have made box calls and had success using them. I have seen calls like you describe in booksand on TV, but have never held or used one. I'd be interested in seeing/trying one.

at my local libary there is a book that teaches you how to make a turkey box call and other things.

RE: make your own call!

I found basic box call making instructions in a couple places on the internet. A one sided box is easiest to make. They can be easy or challenging to make depending on design and methods. If you need something to do this time of year, might as well try it. It is great to take a bird with a call you've made.
