Stalking turkeys
 

I just started hunting fall turkeys 3 seasons ago. I've hunted spring turkeys since the mid 90's. When the fall season opened a couple years ago, I didn't know how to hunt them, so I went out sneaking around looking for them. When I found a group of them, I watched where they were going, then made a plan to ambush them. This weekend I went out for the start of my 3rd fall season and got my 4th bird by stalking. It is quite exciting. I hunt in hilly areas, so that helps for stalking.

I'm not sure what Oneshot7 was reffering to but theres nothing wrong with what your doing.
When I hunt for turkeys I'll do a little scouting before the hunt to locate a roosting tree and then try the same as you and set - up an ambush site.
If I know where there roosting and where there going after fly down the rest is a piece of cake.

Hey there fellers before you go jumping on oneshot you'd better undestand the safety issue invovled here and the law.Stalking is very dangerous in the turkey woods simply because you have no idea who else is hunting your birds particicularly on heavy hunted ground.I've been stalked myself and it aint pretty when someone sneaks up on you with a firearm pointed your way.Stalking itself is ILLEGAL in the statePennsylvania because of the danger involved..http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/cwp/view.asp?a=466&q=152078
Obviousily getting into a good set-up position to work birds takes some good stealthy tactics but there is a definate difference between getting into position to work a bird or even ambush one THAN the obvious act of sneaking up on one with the intention of killing one...Bob

Bobgobble, I don't know what you were reading, but no one was jumping on anyone. Just asking questions.

Btw, I hunt on very private land (mine) and no one else better be hunting turkeys on it unless they have permission.

I will check the Wis. game laws to see if stalking is legal or not. Thanks for the heads up.

Greg I know exactly what I am reading and thats why I gave the heads up!!!By the way private land was where I was stalked by two fellas that were trespassing and one of em had a .243 to boot...[:-]I've also had a load of magnums shot over my head from a dood that decided he couldn't wait for the birds to fly out of the roost so he stalked the roost tree and shot into the birds,that also was on private ground and Inever did catch that jacka$$!!!Just be safe thats all the reply is intended to preach!!!;)

Bob, just saying that no one was jumping on Oneshot7, we were just asking questions. Plain and simple wondering whowould bust us andwhy.

BTW, my land seems a bit more private than yours as I've never seen a human bein, except my son, on my land.

Thanks for the heads up though, I still have to check my states game laws on that.

Must be nice Greg..:)Seems likespring gobbler season brings out the best of em here.Worse than deer season.Although this year was pretty good,looking forward to the fall season herein about a month!:D
