Official contest FINAL SCORE

It has taken me awhile to get this done I know. I have been extremely busy. Not only do I travel from state to state but I also do alot of hunt bookings for IMB Outfitters. It just seems funny that some people got upset because it took me so long ot get this done, when this contest is only to help people meet other hunters and possibly get together and go on a hunt in their home states. There are NO prizes for this contest just the prize of making new FRIENDS. But here are the results of the contest.

Team 1 693.725
Team 2 543.625
Team 3 723.75
Team 4 707.625
Team 5 606.45
Team 6 657.375
Team 7 390.8595
Team 8 778.5
Team 9 636.25
Team 10 349

TEAM 8 WON THE CONTEST
Congratulations to everyone that hunted and made it home safely this spring.

Hi Pat
First of all I would like to say I'm SORRY for being ignorant I didn't mean to make any body mad or upset.
I understand that you have been out of towm and you do have a job to do.
I hope there are no bitter feelings between all the forum members and myself and I hope we can go on being a freindly forum.
Again I do want you to know that I'm Sorry.

RE: Official contest FINAL SCORE

Pat,

That's all well & good, but the bottom line is if you didn't have the time, you could have delegated or even asked someone to take over the responsibility.

It may be for fun, but when you have a few hundred people wondering about the outcome, it's nice to see the results during the season. Hardly anybody visits now, simply because it's no longer turkey season and everybody is busy doing they're summer thing.

Next time, instead of making excuses as to why it took you so long, simply apologize and state that next year with your extended committments you will know that you won't have the time to run the contest...

A little modesty goes a long way dude, hopefully you got the hint [&o]...

First RDHunter there are never any bad feelings here. I Thank you for your post.
Strut&Rut There were only two people that contacted me about helping and they were JW and Rob/Pabowyer which did help me when they could. So if you are upset with how long it took me then I apologise to you for you being upset. Maybe next year I can solicite your help.
Glad you all had a safe hunting season.

This is exactly why contests have been near stopped here at this site and a lot of others. Years back we had some major Blow ups over Prizes and that came to an end, because of people that joined a fun contest and then got upset in the end.

These contests are FREE , no one pays to enter and if there is prizes they cam out of other users pockets. The prize thing was Drpped years back and Pat decided to carry on with the forum fun, but I would be very surprised if he puts his hand up next season, and I wouldn't blame him if he didn't.

Pat , Thankyou anyways for taking the time, to put this on and allow yourself time to come back even if it was a little late to talley the scores...BT

jrbsr you were on team 3...

A salute to team 8 our 2006 champions. You guys really knocked'em down!

I am not pointing my finger at anyone in particular really I am not; but I don't think there is any excuse for someone to think they are going to get a prize for winning our turkey contest, after all it was perfectly clear in the rules that it was all for fun and scoredon the honor system.

By the same tokenthe participantsshouldn't beexpected to wait untilalmost the end of July to find out which team won.If HNI generates enough excitement to get 300 people to sign up for a "fun" contest itsurelyhas to be good for everybody, especially the sponsors. I couldn't get 300 people to sign up for a goodraffle if I gave the tickets away:D. When no team scores are posted during the season when people are checking in to see how their team is doing and the final results are not in until turkey season is but a memory; it takes all of the excitement out of the fun contest. Those are just the cold hard facts.

RE: Official contest FINAL SCORE

Normally I wouldn't be like this but enough is enough. I don't get paid by hunting net to run a contest, I don't even workk for huntingnet. I did this mainly to just help other hunters meet each other. It strictly a volunteer event. I guess what I am trying to say is EVERY HUNTER that got to go out in the woods this year is a WINNER. Results from the contest are just a bonus. Yea it may give you bragging rights and such but in the long run we all just LOVE this sport. Adrian is correct this contest was shut down a couple of years ago and I was asked by the forum members since Adrian had enough of it to run this contest. Last year it was run smoothly because I hade alot more time to work on it. I was not anticipating not having the time this year due to my new job. Everyone that visits this forum could have looked at it this way. Alot of hunters harvestes some awesome birds this year and got great pleasure out of telling the story. SCORES really don't mean much compared to memories. I have said my peace

RE: Official contest FINAL SCORE

Pat,

Let me first say that I could care who won. I've been on this site a looong time, and I remember the first few contests. Usually there were 3-4 teams, and each team harvested 3 or 4 birds.

The contests are definitely fun, to read the stories and see the pictures, including the misses. We all know that the missed opportunities often make us better hunters, so sharing the defeats (in a way) makes us all better...

I guess I should have began my earlier post by stating that it was going to be a bit sarcastic. I just wanted you to realize that you seemed to be passing blame around on everything in your life. We're all busy. I'm about to matriculate a Doctorate program, I do home-remodeling on the side, my wife works part-time and I've got two small children (5 & 1) that I care for the nights my wife works. I squeeze in hunting and some competitive sports on the side... MOST of us on here lead busy lives...

I was just pointing out that as a moderator, you could have contacted the other mods for help. Considering that a few members on this board were over-eager to get the results, I'm sure they would have assisted also. A simple two sentence reply stating you were swamped would have let everyone know exactly HOW busy you are/were.

Good luck with the upcoming season ;)

Cheers,
S&R

RE: Official contest FINAL SCORE

Pat,

Thanks for running the contest and posting the results, it was a lot of fun. Yes, the camraderie and making of new friends is the main part of the contest BUT we are all competitive by nature. If the contest was just for meeting new people why in the world did we keep score in the first place. Another way to sum all this up is to ask yourself if you watched the superbowl and didnt get to find out the final score for two months.

Anyway it was a good time and I am looking forward to participating next year.

Guys, Pat don't have to do this. Just doesn't have to. I think it's important to realize that IF we want to continue to have fun w/ these contests we best not be biting the hand that feeds, ya know? ;) Pat's a busy dude, and perhaps next year he'll solicite help if he needs it. But the bottom line here is this. If we want to have a contest next year, let's be grateful we have fellas like Pat that are willing to put in.....oh, I don't know, how many hours would you say you put in doing this, Pat.....Prolly close to 40 or so, huh?

That being said, I simply would just like to extend my right hand to Pat, and say thanks for the hard work. I look forward to it again next year!

I didnt have a problem the way the contest was ran. I think its great Pat took on the responsibility on running the contest. This was my first year entering the contest and I myself enjoyed reading the posts and looking at everyone and their birds. I guess one thing that turkey hunting has taught me thru out the years is patience. I also put it to use in everyday life. So I didnt care when the scores were posted.I myself dont have a problem helping out next year with the contest. Maybe some others on here should also speak up and volunteer to help out. If others want the scores back in a matter of days then feel free to volunteer as well. Maybe each team should have a designated scorer and have them tally up the scores. Just a thought... I know the feeling I did the deer gun contest,
Last 05/06 season its not as easy as it looks.
Just putting the teams toghether is kinda hard.

And I did the fishing tournament the year before.

Im in school now, 11 hrs a day 4 days a week
for 2 years so I probbly won't have
Any time to do any for a while.
But it was fun.
And there was some good pictures and storys.

AgainI thank Pat for running the contest, he took the initiative to step forward and volunteer.

BUT Mobow dont try to tell me it took 40 hours of time to run the contest. Let's see, there's step 1: copy last years rules and post a sign up sheet-total time 1 hour, step 2: pick teams 2 hours, step 3: add up scores and post results 2 hours= total time 5 hours spread out over a couple months. Thats not that hard for most people even with a busy schedule. Pat has probably spent more time dealing with thecriticism than he did with the contest. And yes I would love to run the contest myself or help in anyway i can next year. Pat, let me know if you need anything.

LOL.......oh, to be so young and nieve.........

So, it wasn't important for him to read through the team threads, make changes as necessary, answer COUNTLESS pm's and questions.....?????

But I can only assume you are speaking from experience here on HNI, right??? ;)

RE: Official contest FINAL SCORE

It does take longer than you think. Actually I type out all of the rules but thank you for the suggest of copying them from the previous years post, (brain fart made me not think of that).; Then I do have to weed through all of the posts, answer alot of pm's and try to stay on top of the sign up. Then after all of that Iactually print out all of the results pages, which this year was cloe to 40 pages when they were all printed. It takes two pieces of paper to print out 1 forum page, after that is done I then have to weed through them all and then scores birds fo rpeople that didn't score them on their own, but just posted the measurements, then weed through the ones that didn't put a team number on thier post and look through approx. 300 user names to find the team they were on. ooh I forgot the time it takes to try and pick fair teams. So yea it does take more time than you gave me credit for. But again I apologise for it taking me awhile to get it finished. I am not mad or even upset at anybody, I understand some of the concerns, but the fact is I didn't have the time I have before to devote to it. I will more than gladly step down adn let someone else run it next season. Just tell me what you want. Pat Ely

"Young and naive," Sorry I forgot to respect the elders of the internet message board. You act like reading and posting on a message board is rocket science, oh yeah and aswering PM's.

Anyway, we're beating a dead horse. I explained my frustration and, Pat, I'm glad you aren't upset about the criticism. No hard feelings on my part.

Pat, I think you do a great job and I would hate to lose you due to criticism by someone that hopes for self advancement of some kind. Sorry, 178. I just get tired of folks who VOLUNTARILY sign up and run something like this only to be questioned about the manner in which they do it. Can't we just say thanks, and move on? Why be critical at all??

Who cares if it took a long time to post the winner, which by the way I was a member of team 8. Thank you very much. It's all in fun. Pat did a good job. I hope we can continue the contest next year. I think it's good for the forum. Nothing wrong with a little friendly competition. I enjoyed it and reading and responding to fellow turkey hunters. Everyone on this forum has at least one thing in common, we love the Wild Turkey. So let's all work together so we can keep this fun contest going. I vote to keep team 8 together for next year, but I am a little bias. By the way, I saw a pretty nice longbeard this week while hanging a couple of bow stands. I'm already fired up for next season.

Pat,

I've read the threads and it sounds like there is some question as to whether or not there will be a contest next year. In the spirit of optimism could you explain this whole team contest to me? how does one get on a team? Do you have to put your own team together? What are the rules, et. etc. etc.

I'm new to this forum as you can see and I absolutely agree that participating in something like this would be a FANTASTIC way to meet other turkey fanatics...............I'm one, so fill me in and let me know what I need to do to get on a team if there is going to be a 2007 spring contest! I'm ready to roll.

RE: Official contest FINAL SCORE

Hootnscoot, first let me say welcome to the forums. Second there will be a contest next year, I have made that decision. Hopefully I won't be quite as busy next year.
The rules are as follows
1. sign up once on the sign up post when it is posted.
2. I will randomely pick teams
3. Be honest with your score it is only for fun anyway
4. Post your score on the scoring post along with your team number.
5. You can post all of your birds scores but only the best onbe will count for your team, so it doesn't matter if it's the first bird you harvest or the last one you harvest.
6. Only legally harvested birds count (not that anyone doesn't harvest them legally)
7. This is the most important rule_____ HAVE FUN AND MEET SOME OTHEAR TURKEY FANATICS.

RE: Official contest FINAL SCORE

I'll be glad to help. I'm quite good with spreadsheets and statistics, so I could probably cut down on some of the time. As a career student (I finally earn the PhD next month!!), I've got quite a few computer tricks up my sleeve.

I can also input names into a statistical database, and simply run a program which will immediately spit out a randomized list of names. We can "rank" the names --- ie. so Bosstom and Pat are not on the same team ;) --- which again will save time.

Let me know when it gets closer next Spring, and I'll be more than glad to help Pat...
