Snake Boots
I live in copperhead country. My kids have seen 3 the last 2 summers right in my neighborhood. One was by my mailbox. A kid not too far from here got bitten by one. I realize that copperheads are not very deadly, but I could step on one and I might have a long walk back. After spring greenup you cant even see your feet walking thru the woods. Do any of y'all have snake boots? What kind do you have? how do you like them? Also has anyone seen a poisonous snake while hunting?

RE: Snake Boots
Natty, I have a pair of Rocky snake boots. So far I like them. But, I havent wore them out hunting yet. I got them for Christmas, I have only been wearing them around the house to try and break them in a bit. Some guys didnt like them because of the way they fit and some didnt like them because the pair they had wasnt water proof, the boots are supposed to be. Anyway, I think my boots would stop a copperhead, but a 4 foot rattle snake is a nother story IMO. There is also snake proof chaps you can buy. There are timber rattlers and copper heads where I hunt, never seen them. But the boot is going to give me a little bit of rest wearing them this spring. I just hope a big timber rattler doesnt strike me. <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> Take care.

RE: Snake Boots
Natty,I wear the snake chaps and think they are just awesome.Mine are made by Rattlers brand and cover the whole length of my leg.It is adjustable as to length by a strap that buttons to your belt. You can walk right through any briar patch too without them thorns a sticken the tar out of ya.I wore mine hunting in Texas last year and walked right through that prickly pear without being stuck. The only down fall is they are a little warm, but to me were well worth the price about $65.00.You can check em out at HuntSmart.com. :)

RE: Snake Boots
I was never too concerned until last year when 24 rattlers were killed brobably within half mile from my camp in Pa. It was dry and they came down to get water, during the course of the summer. Now I need to get something, I was considering chaps, but I have an old pair of my Trooper boots that go almost to the knee and are leather, should work,if they still fit after 20 years....

RE: Snake Boots
I have both rattle snakes and copperheads in my turkey woods. I have never worn snake boots. I just try to stay out of there area I know they are at and have seen them at. As for deadly if you are allergic reaction to bee stings it is very deadley. Take care and look before you sit.

RE: Snake Boots
For the last twenty years i have been involved in amature herpetology, this has brought me into contact with near every type of venomus snake in North America. With this experience behind me I too own a pair of Rocky Outback snake boots. They are waterproof for awhile.I started taking on water after six months of regular wear, but my profession keeps me out in the woods 4-6 days a week.Under normal wear and tear I would expect they would stay dry and last several seasons.
I have been hit by three types of venomous snakes in the boots, Timber rattler ( or Canebrake) copperheads, and Moccassins. In each case the boots did their job.If your wondering, we tested them for an article I wrote on venomous snakes a few years back. After littlerally hundreds of hits on the boots empty with no penetration I allowed them to strike the boot while wearing it. In no way would I suggest anyone else doing this . you'll just have to take my word for it they will repel even the largest of rattler hits. As far as seeing them in the wild, I see em all the time, but I am also a trained eye and looking for em.For the most part they are easilly avoided and other than flat out stepping on one your chances of being bit are slim. Beyond all that, I would highly reccomend the rockies they as already noted allow you to tuck your pants repelling ticks and some of the chiggers, they are easily broken in, and a whole lot more comfortable than a rubber boot after putting down several miles during a day of turkey hunting. |
