Head Color??
What does the different color of a gobblers head mean? I always thought that a bright red head means they are nervous and if they are in range you better shoot. Help me out here.

RE: Head Color??
I've never heard that but I do know that whatever color it is displaying, red, white, or blue, if the color is very bright and colorful the brid is usually very excited and full of lust.
When they spot you or trouble the color definitely goes dull quick. |
RE: Head Color??
Strutting bird = white/blue. typically dominant. I've only seen jakes and subordinate toms with red heads.

RE: Head Color??
When the head of a Gobbler is Bright Red with a noticable Blue around the eye and White cap, it means he is excited and is in display for the approval of a hen. If his head turns white with very little or distinct red throughout the crunkles then he is ready to mate and has made his mind up to which hen he will service. If the head turns all red with little colour otherwize , he is mad as another gobbler has stepped in his turf.
Hope that helps...BT |
RE: Head Color??
I agree with Adrian. My turkeys here at home act just as Adrian said.

RE: Head Color??
I don't have near the experiance of these other guys, but I can tell you that this bird came to my decoy, realized something was wrong and was leaving when I shot. He still has some blue, and I didn't see him strut or vocalize once.
