RE: Different calls
This is only my second year hunting and I had good success last year with a diaphragm call, This year I am using "The Freak" slate call with a hardwood striker and its working great so far called in 5 jakes and a hen and had one turkey get hung up on a fence in the first two days! The jakes were really small so there aren't any dead one's yet, but they all came withing shooting range except the one that got hung up on the fenceline.

RE: Different calls
Diaphragm and slate are my two favorites. I like a box call for hunting in the wind though.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Lynch's Fool Proof. $24.99

RE: Different calls
I use mouth diaphrams, slate calls with a carbon hickory and cherry strikers, a tube call for loud yelps, cutts, and gobbles.
All this along with an owl shock gobble, crow, coyote and woodpecker for locator calls. I want the ability to sound like a whole flock of turkey if need be. Plus, sometimes Ol Tom will like one call and not another. |
RE: Different calls
I love my quaker boy Hurricane box call. You don't have to apply chalk to it and it is waterproof. I think I payed like 18 bucks for it.

RE: Different calls
I like friction calls , especially slates . I carry slate , glass , and acrylic pot type calls at all times , along with a selection of at least 5 strikers of various woods and synthetics . HS Hammerin' Crow is the only locator I carry , I can't hoot worth a ... well , you know . I'm not fond of the push button friction types , none that I've tried sounded remotely realistic , and I can't use diaphram calls with consistancy due to my mouth structure . I've recently aquired the materials to make a sycamore pot call with slate over glass , it should sound sweet when I'm finished . [8D]

RE: Different calls
I just bought a mouthcall and after one day , I'm not sure if I'll ever get the hang of it . Makes your mouth and toungue tickle, doesn't sound at all like a turkey. The box call I have is redhead, from Bass-pro and it sounds Ok. I just bought a pot call, not sure of the brand but it sounds really good. The push button calls only sound realistic if you just lightly push it to make subtle calls, like when the turkey is close. You can strap it to your gunstock and operate it with your trigger finger. Hope some of this helps and makes sense
