modified choke
has any one used a modified choke? is it good or bad? some help please
|
RE: modified choke
for turkey hunting? no. works great tho when im duck or dove hunting
|
RE: modified choke
I'm using a modified. If that's all ya got I think you are fine. Shoot some shells and see how many pellets your getting in a 2 inch circle. I'm good up to 30 yds.
Mine does ok. C7 |
RE: modified choke
Modifieds do not work well. They would have to be extremely close to be effective. I wouldnt use one. It may wound it and then suffer. I will only be an ethical hunter.

RE: modified choke
while i dont think i would use it, could work at lessthan 20 yrds
|
RE: modified choke
Well IMHO, for turkeys it might not be the best. Seems the pattern would open up too much and risk missing, wounding and not recovering, or killing the bird, but wasting or messing most of the good meat because of pellets all over. But again, just MHO! :D[8D]

RE: modified choke
Yeah, I would highly recommend getting at least a full choke. You can shoot it at paper and see but honestly, I wouldn't use it if I was you.

RE: modified choke
well the thing is that thats how i bought it and i cant change it
![]() ![]() its a combo rifle with a 30.06 and a 12 gauge but i cant change the choke so what do i do lol? shoot my shotgun then try to throw a rock at the tom if it tries to run away lol?![]() |
RE: modified choke
mod would be fine for doves and quail, but other than that i wouldnt use it. check your chokes and find the full, i think you will like that better. otherwise just let the turkeys get in close and try your luck. all it takes is a couple of bb's to connect in the right spot.

Second, the best thing with the modified is get some shells and pattern it. 20, 30, 40 yards, and see how it hits. Maybe it will be okay to use........ use the 10 inch circle and then the turkey head targets and it will give you a good idea. Then once you know the max effective distance, you make sure you mark it some way and then wait for a tom to get close! [8D] |
RE: modified choke
I just read JLmoore's post and couldnt call my local gunsmith fast enough. He says its no big deal at all. It never even crossed my mind to have a barrel tapped to accept chokes. I bought a whole new gun cause my remington 1187 is a fixed modified. UN FREAKIN BELIEVEABLE. And my gunsmith only charges $75 to do it. He says the only catch is it has to be a certain thickness. Well guess where my remington is spending the weekend!!!!!!

RE: modified choke
Your modified choke will kill every turkey it hits as long as you keep your shots within the limits of your gun.
Simply pattern the gun at various yardages and stay within that acceptable yardage when it comes time for the shot. The other thing you want to be sure of is to check your guns point of impact so you don't get any surprises if one comes in up close and personnal.:D Yes it is nice to have a gun that will "mow'em down" at fifty yards but it is not a prerequisite to go turkey hunting. Over 90 % of the turkeys I have killed with a shotgun have been under 30 yards and a number of them under twenty. For some of these tight shooting guns if the bird is under twenty yards your handicapping yourself. :D |

Hey I might need the address to that gun smith. |
RE: modified choke
Sorry to report, My barrell was to small. But I still reccomend swinging it by your local gsmith and seeing what he can do. Or buying a new barrell. My gunsmith said the Outer diameter of the barrell had to be .850 of an inch. If that help anybody.
